1911 Census my great uncle is listed as an unemployed Rick Instructor, would this be something to do with hayricks. He's 21 living in London, seems rather odd as does not fit in with the rest of the family occupations, non farming.
Have you got a census reference or at least his name and where he lived so that we can have a look at the entry please?
It does look like rink but looking at the 1901 census his father's occupation was - Superintendent of stiles? would that be something similar say hay ricks? must say some of these occupations are a little strange!
I think Bay Horse has nailed it. The number 469 by "Rink Instructor" is the 1911 census occupation code for "Performers, Showmen; Exhibition, Games - Service". Thank you Bay Horse and Flook, the area would fit. I can't imaging my ancestors roller skating, I only knew the Hammersmith Palace as a dance venue. I had no idea what the codes meant on the 1911 census, but since found a list on FMP which will be helpful for future reference .
Gillyflower, I can't see there being much supervising of stiles unless there were a lot in the area that needed upkeeping. Going back further the brother was a Visir Toother in India, could that be a dentist, as you say some of these occupations are very strange, but interesting
