Sorry for the boring research bit, but I wanted to give some background to my request for help. Facebook has a site on my town. There was an old picture of the town which others had given names for people living there mid 1900's. One name that popped up was Rev. Wilkinson. (no first names mentioned) I'd never heard of him. Looking at the cemetery catalogue I did last summer I found. ELIZABETH WILKINSON 1902 — 1979 MARIAN WILKINSON 1892 — 1980 JOHN THOMAS WILKINSON 1893 — 1980 NELLIE ELLIOTT 1896 — 1981 Not sure if it was one of these I decided to investigate. 1939 register Living at - Roseville, Presteigne Road , Knighton U.D., Radnorshire, Wales John T Wilkinson 10 Dec 1893 Male Minister Of Religions (Meth) Married Marian Wilkinson 24 Mar 1892 Female Wife - Unpaid Domestic Duties Married Hettie M Dormer (Wilkinson) 01 Aug 1921 Female Junior Asst At Library Single Mary Jane Elliott 27 Jan 1861 Female Incapacitated Widowed Nellie Elliott 29 Jun 1896 Female Shop Asst Retired Ill Inserted Now Unpaid Single So I have found the correct person. John married Marian Elliot in 1920 in Hull. Marian was the daughter of John Elliot and Mary Jane Purdon. Looking at the deaths in town on FMP it gives the dates of birth John Thomas Wilkinson was born on 10 Dec 1893 he died in 1980 in Knighton, Powys. Marian Wilkinson (nee Elliot) was born on 24 Mar 1892, Hull and died in 1980 in Knighton, Powys Elizabeth Wilkinson was born on 10 Jan 1902 and died in 1979 in Knighton, Powys Nellie Elliot was born on 29 Jun 1896 and died in 1981. Nellie Elliot was a sister to Marian. Mary Jane Elliot was Marian and Nellie's mother. Hettie Marian Wilkinson was born on 01 Aug 1921 in Kidderminster, her death is registered in Ludlow, Shropshire in 1998. Hettie's husband, Ralph H Dormer, was born 28 Dec 1897 in Hendon, Middlesex and died on 15 May 1978 at 6, Ragleth Road, Church Stretton, Shropshire. OK, so that's what I have found. I have gone back a few generation too. What I can't find is any other mention on John Thomas Wilkinson being a Methodist Minister.
From a site called My Primitive Methodist Ancestors Born 10/12/1893 in Hull Entered the ministry 1917 Died 13/11/1980 Knighton
You might find something in the University of Manchester archived records. Code: www.library.manchester.ac.uk Fingers crossed for you Terry.
Nothing in the Manchester records he died to late to be included (well that is what I think I read). This is the link - I cannot find any 'asking for money', so hope it is ok http://www.myprimitivemethodists.org.uk/page/primitive_methodist_ministers-20
Hi John T (Thomas) Wilkinson was a senior academic in the Primitive Methodist Church, fulfilling the roles of Librarian and later Principal of the Hartley Victoria College in Manchester. He wrote many articles but his most notable works were the centenary biographies of William Clowes (1951) and Hugh Bourne (1952), the men seen today as the chief founders of the church. He was almost certainly responsible, too, for the transcriptions of the unpublished biography drafts and the surviving diaries of Bourne, the originals of which are now held in the archives of The University of Manchester Rylands Library on Deansgate. Wilkinson was as you might expect prosperous: when he died his proved will placed him comfortably among the richest 10% of the population dying that year. You would not find him in the Rylands list because it only lists ministers who did not resign from office before retirement, and who died up to 1963. I know nothing about his wider family circumstances.
