Luke was baptised in Lee, Buckinghamshire 3 May 1809, the son of Joseph and Hannah Pearce.

Luke married Hannah Walker in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire 14 December 1829 and a daughter was born 13 June 1830. This situation was not an unusual situation and later Hannah produced a son born 2 October 1831.

In Little Missenden in 1829 was a lady by the name of Elizabeth Tucker - a single woman - and she gave birth to a son Charles 31 January 1830. Again this is not an unusual situation.

1841 census in Little Missenden, finds Luke with his wife Hannah and their 5 children and Luke is an Ag. Lab. Next door is Elizabeth Tucker with her son Charles - no occupation indicated - living with 2 ladies of independent means.

Between 1841 and 1843 Elizabeth and Charles move a few miles to Chesham Bois and then she marries Thomas Butterfield there 14 February 1843. By 1851 Elizabeth and Thomas have 3 children and can be found in Chesham Bois.
Her son Charles has moved to Hillingdon, Middlesex by 1850 and is working as a Servant. Charles married in Hillingdon 16 June 1850. Charles names his father as Luke Pearce - Ag. Lab.

Meanwhile, back in Little Missenden, Luke's wife Hannah died Jul-Sep q. 1846. Luke can be found in 1851 census with 6 children at home - the youngest a son - age 5 whose birth was registered Oct-Dec q. 1846. Nearby in the parish is Sarah West a 34 year unmarried lady with an infant West. Sarah and Luke marry later in 1851 In 1854 they have a daughter.

    2 questions:
1] Was Luke really the father of Charles Tucker?
2] What became of the infant West, who I believe was born Oct-Dec q. 1850 - birth registered in Wycombe that include the parish of Little Missenden?

Sarah West doesn't have an infant with her in 1851. Sarah is an infant school mistress; what you are reading as 'infant West' in fact is part of Sarah's address and says 'infant day school', or that's how I interpret it ;)

On blowing up the image and re-reading it I believe you are correct. So now I'm just left with one question - the paternity of Charles.

He actually describes his father as 'Luke Pearce, labourer'

Unless a bastardy order was made and has survived, Colin, I'm not sure you can prove who Charles' father is. Have you investigated the area looking for other possible Luke Pearces'?

Have tried to no avail and even the family trees that have either Luke Pearce or Thomas Butterfield in them make no reference to Elizabeth and Charles Tucker.

So those are not helpful either

I guess there is only one person who knows the father of Charles and she's long gone.
My imagination has been running wild with Luke darting back and forth from one house to the other trying not to get caught..:D:D:D

    Me as well!!

The Charles - son of Elizabeth Tucker - belongs to my wife's family tree. Charles is the grandfather of the wife of an uncle.

The Tucker family proved to be an interesting quest, however S.W.M.B.O.'d feels differently from myself and has no interest as to whether the Luke Pearce a Labourer on the marriage certificate of Charles, is the same Luke Pearce an Ag. Labourer born and baptised in Lee.

So ends our "laugh of the day".
