Thomas Latham was a Ships Surgeon with the Honorable East India Company and he perished off Mauritius in 1809. In 1805 he wrote his Will and the final paragraph reads " If that child dies too, the money is to go to my brother Jno. Wm. Lathan. Looking into John William Latham, the only suitable connection is for his brothers birth on 26 May 1776 in Lambeth Surrey.Parents John and Eliz. Thomas was resident in Lambeth, for the main beneficiary of his will is a Mrs. Catherine Cartwright, East Street Lambeth. Now I get stuck finding any more info for Thomas. I want to find/confirm whether (A) John and Eliz are correct as his parents and (B) Where he was born etc. and (C) any of Thomas's siblings. I just cannot find any records for John and Eliz in Surrey or nearby Counties. Did they originate from further afield?? I have come to a brick wall. Can anyone help me to climb over it, please?
Not at all what you are after as you probably have this but I found it interesting. A Register of Ships Employed in the Service of The Honorable, The United East India Company. JANE DUC of GORDON 820 Tons, 2 Voyage Ceylon and Bengal (Charles Christie Esq) probably the owner Capt. John Cameron 1. Peter Baxter 2. Samuel Sims 3. George Coward 4. Thomas Osborn Surgeon, Thomas Latham Pur, Peter Theobald Sailed Ports 8 May 1808 Parted company from the fleet on 14th March off Mauritius and not seen since.
In your thread 'Margaret Brannon' in 2015 it says in the will (post #20) that Thomas father was 'William Lewis Latham'. Unless I read that wrong...maybe I'll read it again.
16 August 1810 Administration of the will of Thomas Latham.... "William Lewis Latham, the natural and lawful father of the said deceased having first renounced the Letters of Administration"
Hi there, Yes, I had most of the info, but the listing of the Officers is new and I'll be adding this to my "Latham life story" Just for interest, the Jane Duchess of Gordon, was one of three ships that were lost. The other two were Lady Jane Dundas, and Calcutta. According to National Archives, the three set off from Mauritius and got lost in a hurricane. The Edinburgh Advertiser of 20 August 1810 reported on the loss listing passengers and crew who had perished. Anyway, many thanks for this extra data.
I've had a search around for William Lewis Latham and the best I can come up with so far is a William Latham, tea merchant and grocer in Lambeth in 1817. Then in 1830 a dissolution of business of same with sons William and Charles. I wrote down the addresses of their three businesses yesterday but now I can't find it.
London Gazette 1829-march 1830 the addresses are given as 20 Charlotte Terrace Lambeth, Whitby Place Lockfields and a dwelling place of Coburg House in the Fulham Road Middlesex. No mention of a John William that I can find. These are most likely not your Lathams but all that has turned up so far.
