Edward Eccleston was born in Cockermouth Cumberland in June 1835. He was single and lodging in Manchester in 1861 but by 1871, according to a transcript found on FMP, he was married and lodging in Midlothian. The only information given as to his address etc, presumably in Edinburgh, is as follows: Age 35 Birth Year 1836 Occupation Hatter Birth Place England House Number 115 House Name Grass Market Parish New Greyfriars County Midlothian Registration District New Greyfriars St George Archive Reference RG10
A quick search on that name from 1836 to 1936 on Scotland's People returns: Census 1871 Census 1881 Valuation Rolls 1905 I'm still learning how to navigate the new site, but I believe you can get limited information without using credits if you bring up those record sets individually and do a search. Also, you can search the House Name in the valuation rolls to see the history of that property, if that is of interest. My connection is slow this morning, so I will leave the follow-up to others.
The 1881 census and 1905 Valuation Roll returns are for a different guy who lived in Glasgow. Don't know if Edward left his wife but there's no sign of her on the 1871 census return, and there's also a great big nothing when searching marriages and deaths. Plenty about Grass Market in the local papers for the time, it appears to have been a popular spot for hanging Covenanters in the 18th century and home to a fair few ne'er do wells, but there's nothing relevant for me.
If you look for him in 1871 on Ancestry, although just a transcription (but does list who is living at the address), there are no others named Eccleston. Lots of other surnames, so maybe it is a boarding house. Anyway, I wonder if FMP have transcribed it incorrectly? Shame we can't see the original census Form
The Edward in 1881 in Glasgow, although noted as born Ireland, is also a hatter - so possibly your man after all? He is a widower in a lodging house with a large number of other men. Birth date isn't too far out. There is a possible marriage in Salford in 1862 to Sarah Ann Ainsworth (lancs bmd) and a possible death of a Sarah Eccleston age 42 in Salford in 1873 which might be worth checking.

This marriage popped up on FreeBMD so some time was spent this afternoon checking the Salford City churches on the Lancs OPC site without any luck. My next move will have to be to trawl through all the other churches listed in the general Salford district, and there are dozens. Had a look at the file this morning (plenty of spare bandwidth now my granddaughter is at Uni. ), but didn't download the pdf as all it seemed to say was in which folio etc the various streets can be found.

Could this perhaps be the baptism of a daughter at St Paul Paddington, Salford: 1 April 1866 Annie daughter of Edward & Sarah ECCLESTON Only a transcript on Ancestry but it is more or less the same area as for the marriage in 1862. Janet
