However in his -favour-, I think this was mentioned but hard to understand. :-

Cambridge Chronicle and Journal 10 April 1835
No true bill was found against James Dennis charged with habing stolen a barrow from a hovel, the property of the highway of Hail Weston.
    Earlier...
Cambridge Chronicle and Journal 15 January 1842
    Speedy Removal of Convicts
The 3 under mentioned convicts who were tried at the quarter sessions last week were removed from Huntingdon county gaol on tyesday last, to be delivered on board Justitia hulk off Woolwich, for embarkation to New South Wales:- James Dennis & John Howard for robbery from the person- they being armed with a bludgeon. Both of them transported for life

Thanks AM for the links but my poor eyes can't read the stuff on James Dennis it is very hard to read. My contact from the monarapioneers newsletter dose not think he belongs to our family, she says no convicts in the Dennis family!
I will tell her to have a look at TD and read it for herself as the give away for me was listing the 2 brothers and 2 sisters with the right names.

From the County of Huntingdonshire Register of all Person Charged with Indictable Offences 6 Apr 1835 a 15 year old James Dennis was tried for Larceny and was acquitted. In the Read and Write column is states that he could read only.

The above #42 are my version from FMP there is another on same lines. Others in other years but not necessarily all same chap.
Might be worth trying for a cheaper short sub on British Newspapers if there is one going.

Thanks Wendy. I see that FMP has Army Deserters 1828 to 1840 for Huntingdonshire and James Dennis is listed but I don't have a sub for them only Anc I wonder if when he enlisted would he have to supply any family info eg fathers name or where born.

Just had a look in the usual places, but couldn't find a really cheap one. They have 12 months for approx. $21.

I only saw the deserting report on him there no attesting or anything else. newspapers had reports on another James Dennis getting promotions, but older than your laddie.
I don't suppose London Gazette would have anything?
    Off to lunch now.

There's a few naughty goings on, on Trove for James Dennis. There is a couple of them though, but still.

Ah! There you go. Our William Williams (convict) was at Gundaroo for a while. Quite a popular little place back then. On the Fish River I think.

I wonder what was there at that time as this James's sister Elizabeth m John Hardwick and they were also at Gundaroo. I even have a friend who's daughter
built a house there about 10 years ago.
