1881 census of Llandyfrydog, Amlwch (RG11/5589, folio 4, page 3) shows the following family living at Tycoed: William ROBERTS Head Mar 42 Chandler Anglesey Ann do Wife Mar 38 do Wife do William do Son 15 Scholar do Robert do Son 12 do do Hugh do Son 8 do do 1871 census of Llandfrydog (RG10/5745, folio 12, page 15) shows William ROBERTS aged 32, a Miner born Llandfrydog, wife Anne aged 28 born Llandfrydog, son Robert aged 2 born Llandfrydog living at Tyn Goed with 2 unmarried boarders who are Dressmakers, namely a Mary ROBERTS aged 26 born Llandfrydog & a Mary HUGHES aged 19 born Carnarvonshire. This could perhaps be William ROBERTS in the 1861 census of Llandfrydog (RG9/4365, folio 9, page 15): Agnes ROBERTS Head Widow 62 Farmer Anglesey Llandfrydog Robert do Son Unmar 25 Miner Copper do do William do Son do 21 do do do Mary do Daur do 18 Servant do do Margaret do Daur 10 do do FindmyPast, which is a pay per view site, has many Welsh parish register images available to view online, amongst which are some for Llandfrydog & Amlwch. They do have the baptismal record of the William ROBERTS I have found in the 1861-1881 census records at Llandfrydog in 1838. I cannot give you full details because of their terms & conditions but it might perhaps be worth your while to search their records to see if any are applicable to your research. But you do need the marriage certificate of William & Margaret to obtain the names of their fathers and their professions to make sure you are tracking back the correct line as ROBERTS is a pretty common surname. I think I forgot a bit : Marriages Dec 1858 Owen Margaret Anglesey 11b-1027 Roberts William Anglesey 11b-1027 Perhaps Ellen's pts.
Great info but nothing stands out. My great great grandfather William roberts had the paint shop called beehive in 1911. He also had the first motorcycle on Anglesey but drawing blanks there. My grandfather on my dads mothers side was cpt James Hughes a mariner
I didn't look into the Maternal Hughes side James, just concentrated on going back with William etc. Not surprised that nothing 'stands out' if you don't know family before William & Margaret with the paint shop. Think on it & see if it fits. do you have any other rellies to confer with?

Can I just make a suggestion, I know this is all concerning one family, but to make it easier would it not be better to open/start another thread for the research on the Hughes's side. That way all the Roberts could be in this thread and the Hughes in another one. If only to help me, I'm starting to get a little confused jumping between the 2 different surnames.
James, Could this be your family in the 1901 census of Amlwch (RG13/5293, folio 46, page 17). For some reason I couldn't find them when searching on their names (our broadband was going up and down like a yo yo yesterday) but a search for ROBERTS at the Bee Hive in Amlwch brought this up today: 61 Mona Street William ROBERTS Head M 35 House Painter Anglesey Llandyfrydog Maggie do Wife M 35 Carnarvonshire Llainrhos Willie do Son 10 Anglesey Llandyfrydog Annie do Daur 9 do do Bobby do Son 5 do Amlwch Johnny do Son 3 do do Richie do Son 1 do do William is described as an Employer at home in this census as he is in the 1911 census. 1891 census of Llandyfrydog (RG12/4677, folio 4, page 2) Tyngongl William ROBERTS Head M 25 Painter Anglesey Llandyfrydog Margaret do Wife M 24 Carnarvonshire Llandudno William do Son 10 months Anglesey Llandyfrydog Robert do Brother S 21 Painter do do If this is your William & Margaret, and he does have the same profession as the father of Griffith in the 1911 census, then the 1891 census tells us that he has a brother Robert aged 21, and searching in the 1881 census for brothers William & Robert ROBERTS born Llandyfrydog leads back to the William & Ann ROBERTS I mentioned in post 22 as possibly being their parents. This theory will only be proved/disproved by the marriage record of William & Margaret. Do you actually already have this record which would disprove the fact that William & Ann could be the grandparents of Griffith? Janet
Yes I agree, Wendy, but I am hoping the profession of William's father on his marriage certificate will narrow it down a bit. Llandyfrydog doesn't seem too big a place and although there are several William ROBERTS born c1866 there, I could only find 1 Robert ROBERTS born c1870 in the census records so fingers crossed and here's hoping that this is James' family in the 1891/1901 census records! Janet
Checking FreeBMD against GRO lists was not ultra helpful tho'. One birth in 1870 was not found on GRO. I tried 1869-1871 Oh fun.
