Pegg Family - Corn Park, Mayfield

Can anyone tell me where or what Corn Park, Mayfield, Staffordshire is?

There's a Joseeph & Charlotte Pegg & family on the 1841 census.

Address is Corn Park, Mayfield, Staffordshire.

The only thing I could come up with is Corn Park Farm, Leek Road, Upper Mayfield, Ashbourne.
Mayfield, a village in Staffordshire on the outskirts of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. I guess that means it straddles the borders.

There is some reference to corn milling from about 1790's.

 

Yes, Joseph and Charlotte are my 3rd great grandparents! Joseph died there and his son Samuel lived there too!

 

Ok, so it was a farm? There is references to Mayfield being in both Staffordshire and Derbyshire - I'm presuming also that it straddles the borders of of both of these shires.

 

Is there any place I can find some history of the area?

Corn Park or Corn Park Farm sounds to me like a little hamlet on Leek Road. There is also a Corn Park Cottage, a B&B.

 

The 1851 census brings up the Lees family at Corn Parke and says that the head Edward is a farmer of 70 Acres. They are the only people listed under Corn Parke so IMHO I'd say it was a farm.

It's in the top right corner, and it appears to include the building just below the top edge, by B.M. 772.8 (ie 772.8 feet above sea level, at a Bench Mark (BM) on a wall there) on the west side of the road, and a row of cottages on the east side a little way to the south. That road is now the A52, the main road from Ashbourne to Leek, and that stretch is part of what's known as Swinscoe Hill.

As Archie's Mum has said, the cottages have been run as a B&B, though they've fairly recently been up for sale:

The description here indicates that there were originally two cottages, and if you go through the pictures (it looks lovely!) the very last one is a map of the area showing that this one is Cornpark Cottage, and the one on the opposite side of the road is Cornpark Farm.

By looking at residences and occupations in censuses, and maybe parish register entries too, you may be able to work out which the Peggs were living in - it's likely that the farmer (boss) was in the farmhouse, and the various labourers in the cottages.

 

If you have a subscription to Find My Past you will be occupied for some time with Pegg family records from St John Baptist at Mayfield. The earliest record for a Joseph Pegg is a burial from 1704. Have been unable to find a marriage to Charlotte though, so perhaps they were married at Ashbourne.

Like so many Staffordshire villages, Mayfield is delightful, which is more than can be said for the county's towns. These vary between nondescript and depressing.

 

Samuel was baptised 14 Jul 1839 at St John Baptist.

 

I have asked Mayfield Heritage to email me any details they may have on it's history. I searched on Google and came up with the the following property description:

CORN PARK COTTAGE, LEEK ROAD, UPPER MAYFIELD ASHBOURNE
Corn Park Cottage is a former farmhouse premises used latterly as a home with Bed and Breakfast providing a useful extra income. The property has extensive accommodation in the main house and further accommodation within a stone built barn adjacent to the property. The buildings stand within grounds that extend to 1.5 acres or thereabouts.

1841 says he was residing with his family at Corn Park. No mention of a cottage. By 1851 he was living at 'The Rise' - it's hard to read. And I see the Lees family were at Corn Park then. In 1861, 6 years before his death he was living with his family at Rise Farm, he was a 'Farmer at/of 32'? Not sure what that means. He son Samuel was 21 (Ag Labourer) and living at the same address.

24 Sep 1823 • Bermondsey St John Horsleydown, Southwark, Surrey, England. But not paperwork to prove this is actually them.

I have had a fellow look into my Pegg family over in Mayfield and he has been able to confirm a lot of the detail that I have found online. My records go back to a Thomas Pegge (Thomas Pegge of Yeldersley) 1609 but I don't have any paperwork to prove it, just matches and hints on Ancestry. The fellow I had researching told me this connection is a major possibility but it would be great to know for sure. If in fact this is true, then Lady Catherine Greene (Pegg) (Mistress to King Charles II), is my 9th great Aunt. But alas, the cost of going back another 7 generations is too much to bear at this moment in time!!

We bought Cornpark Cottage about the time you posted this message. I have started to look into the house’s history as I am writing a novel and the local history is so fascinating. I may be wrong but I imagine from what I have read so far that corn park cottages and corn park farm weren’t so split apart by the road until 1831 when a new road was built. Until then I think the coach road went through the edge of Upper Mayfield.
