Mmmm, a late start after a very late night (past 2am) - some catching up to do. Never any occupation (other than during the war when she was a telephone operator at Burtonwood) .... "operator" GrannyBarb ? Now there is a thought .... Burtonwood was an American air force base during the war - I wonder if she met someone there and went to America to visit (or re-kindle an old flame ?). From what I (vaguely) recall, she said she travelled all over the States. First husband (John) was English, his father Irish (a Rev.). I'm thinking "Magnolia Beach Circle" is possibly an hotel ? Aircraft was a 4 engine (propellor) Lockheed Constellation A/C No: NC 90815, Flight No: 961/22, Paris to New York via Shannon and Gander. Purported flight times seem to vary (depending on the website) between 14 and 17 hours. That was a nice exercise that meant a lot to me, thank you all
I think you may have it there. If not an old flame, perhaps a purely platonic invitation to visit someone's folks back home.
Did some further digging. Found the directory possibles in the 1940 Census, and eliminated all of them.
I am surprised at the number of John M Haughton and Gertrude Haughton living in New York. Do you know how old John Maurice was when he married Gertrude. I could be off on a wild goose chase, but I am happy to keep investigating.
I also found a WWII U.S. draft card for John M. Haughton but he was 50 years old - a lot older than your Mum. [found at familysearch]
Shipsnostalgia.com Athel Tankers.... HAUGHTON, Third Engineer Officer, John Maurice. MV ATHELCROWN (Liverpool) Merchant Navy 22/1/1942 age 29. Son of Rev J O Haughton, MA and Eleanor Haughton of Wallasey Cheshire. So age about 28/29 when he married Gertrude
The Shiplist Torpedoed and sunk in North Atlantic on voyage from Cardiff to Aruba, in ballast. 4 lost.
Sorry catlady you are chasing your tail - John died in 1942, three weeks after he married Gertrude (see #9).
