Hi Jennifer, welcome to the forum. I'd love to revisit this family - very intriguing - it may take me a day or two to get my head around them again.

The Shelley family are wonderfully creative and I have thorougly enjoyed researching them. As mentioned my connection to the family is Miriam Dawes, Adolphus's wife.

    Dear Stafford, Mealymoo and others...
I wish I had found this web-site before! Fascinating!...my 4x Gr Grandfather was Alexander Mundell (1768-1837), a prominent solicitor in London, who Married Susanna Champneys (1777-1846) and they had 13 children; the 7th child and 5th daughter, was my 3x great grandmother, Camilla Windus Mundell, who married George Aithchison, a successful shipowner, with business in Scotland and London. George and Camilla's 4th child and 2nd son, was John Robert Aitchison (1843-1891) - more on him in a second.....Alexander and Susannah Mundell's 11th child and 5th son was William Adam Mundell (1815-1875), a QC and Barrister. On the back of the small oil painting I have of Alexander Mundell, probably from about 1820, is a note that says something like (I don't have the inscription with me, but have it at home) "from the ancient family of Magnaville, who came to this country with King William in 1066. He had 7 sons but none of them had a male heir to continue the name". If William Adam Mundell's 2 children, William Hugh Alexander Mundell/ sometimes Shelley etc(!) (1846-1917) and Eve Mary Mundell/ Blacklock etc (1848-1928) were in fact illegitimate, the inscription on the back of the painting, would be technically true! Interesting that John Robert Aitchison, above, married his First cousin, Eve Mary Mundell, apparently daughter of William Adam Mundell, ....and that they had 6 children....before they got a rather nasty divorce. That must have been pretty embarrassing for the rest of the family! I have posted much of what I had previously, on ancestry.com, including pictures of William Adam Mundell, that I got from a cousin, and several of the children of John Robert and Eve Mary Aitchison. It sounds as if Mary Price did marry Edward Blacklock and have Adolphus Charles Blacklock, who trained as a Barrister, perhaps under his mother's live-in boyfriend, common-law husband or whatever!, William Adam Mundell. They were obviously together for quite a long time given that they were together when WHA Mundell was born in 1846, I presume, and in the 1851 and 1861 census records. Interesting that neither of her parents was a witness when Eve Mary married John Robert. After Adolphus Charles Blacklock's birth, Mary Blacklock, seems to have had a relationship with a Mr Shelley and had 2 children with him...and then the 2 children with William Adam Mundell...and maybe more later!! In spite of some differing surnames, the consistency of the First names, is much too strong to be coincidental. Anyway, as some of you saw, I posted W H A Mundell's birth certificate, on ancestry.com which clearly shows his mother as Mary Price and I have applied for Eve Mary Blacklock's birth certificate, to see who her parents are given as. I would guess that the her mother will be Mark Blacklock, which was probably Mary Price'e legal name at the time, and William Adam Mundell as the father. Next time I am in London, probably in July/ August time, I will go to the National Archives in Kew and see if William Adam Mundell's will is there. I hope that it will tell us more! Anyway, sorry for such a long-winded note, but you have all got me rather intrigued!....I am of course happy to share any info with any of you who are interested!......and will post more, when I find out...
    Best, George

Thanks so much, Wendy.....this is one of the most extraordinary mysteries I have come across in my 16 or 17 years looking at my family history!....I have a lot of info, and another distant cousin, Alexis Champneys Beckstead has written an amazing book about the Champneys family, and my 4x great grandmother, Susanna Champneys. Happy to share with anyone interested!... what is your connection to this amazing mystery?...
    Best,
    George

Ok, team....this is interesting! I just received Eve Mary's birth certificate and it shows:
Born: 13th November 1848 at 15, Elizabeth Street South, Pimlico
    Name: Eve Mary
    Sex: Girl
    Name of father: Edward Blacklock
Name of mother: Mary Blacklock, formerly Price
    Occupation of father: Shoemaker
Name, description and residence of informant: Mark Blacklock, Mother, 15, Elizabeth Street, Pimlico
    When Registered: 24th december, 1848

So it makes me think that she was adopted by William Adam Mundell....or that William Adam Mundell was the father, but Mary Blacklock, nee Price, was still married to Edward Blacklock....I wonder if we will ever know for certain!....certainly there was some funny stuff going on, by the sound of it!....
At least we know that WHAM and Eve Mary had the same mother!!! I will try to scan the certificate and post it so you can see it!....
    So, experts....any more theories??!!...
    Best, George

Also wanted to say that William Adam Mundell's daughter, as we believe she was, and who married her 1st cousin John Robert (Jack) Aitchison, had 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, but 2 of the 3 boys died as infants. The 3rd was a George William John Aitchison, born 12th March, 1870 in Sydenham, Kent. He went out to Oakland, California in about 1902 and married a Laura and they had a son called John Mundell Aitchison. I am not sure whether they married in London before went to Oakland nor whether the son was born in Oakland or London. Sadly GWJA died in 1905 - his will is available on ancestry....and he left his estate to his widow, Laura and son John Mundell Aitchison. I am having a dig around. Also, through this web site, and him reaching out to me, I discovered that the middle daughter of Jack and Eve, Susannah Ann Aitchison, married a James Veitch Paterson who has filled me in on various relations that I knew nothing about!....Thanks!....Interestingly, one of the daughters of JVP and Susannah Ann married a Harry G Crowden, whose son, Graham Crowden and grand daughter, Sarah Crowden are reasonably well known actors!....Downton etc.....Thanks, Richard!....

    Hello
By chance I came across this post and whilst I realise it's quite old I hope someone might see it.
Not of much use I suppose in some respects but the Charles Jeffcock mentioned on the 1891 census at the beginning of this thread was my 3 x great grandfather.
