When the 1911 census came out we discovered very unexpectedly that my husbands GGMother came from Carlow (they were an Army family hence no previous census). She was recorded as Francis J. The marriage record in Ancestry showed her father as Abraham ADAMS and the place Tipperary. Next step was to look for Birth or Baptism and found in IrishGenealogy.ie Name Frances Jane ADAMS Birth 18 Jan 1841 Address Carlow and Johnstown; Father Abraham ADAMS servant; Mother Sarah KERR . The year of birth fits neatly with 1911 census & age at death and it is the 'right'place'. I was worried about the marriage in Tipparary but on Googling Johnstown I discover there is a large property owned by the Bunbury family. Who also had a connection to Tipperary. So is it too much of a leap of imagination to assume Abraham Adams moved to Tipparary with his family OR perhaps more likely, the young Francis was employed by the Tipperary branch of the family? And how do I find out? Jenny
Could the bride's mother have connections to the wedding place? This happened with some of my Scots bunch.
Is that new member of the family tucked up under a cosy pink hat? I think the brides mother is going to be my latest brick wall until I can pursuade my other half that I NEED another holiday in Dublin record office.
She'll be three next month and runs me ragged! I like your thinking re NEEDing a research holiday. I tried without success to get my doctor to write me a prescription for a new sofa to help my back. Didn't work, though. I did talk my other half into giving me cash gifts to purchase credits and subs for online research. Next best thing to being there. I'm not much help in Ireland, though.
Don't know whether this will help or not, but FMP have Griffiths Valuation records for Ireland and an Abraham ADAMS appears in Carlow in 1852 and in Shankhill in 1860. I am assuming they are one and the same as they are the only records for an Abraham ADAMS. As he was a Servant, perhaps he moved around with the family he was working for?? Ancestry have the actual image for the Griffiths Valuation record of 1853 and shows Abraham living on Montgomery Street, Carlow, the lessor being a James YOUNG. There is a death registration for an Abraham ADAMS in 1867 at Carlow, aged 50. If this is your Abraham ADAMS, perhaps widowed mother Sarah moved to Tipperary? Or perhaps not as there is a death registration in Carlow for a Sarah ADAMS in September qtr 1896, aged 94 - however if this is correct, it would make her a lot older than Abraham who was supposedly born c1817! I have probably now confused things even more. Janet
Thanks Janet. I will have another look with your info in mind. I had not found the Shankhill entry. I am thinking that the Sarah ADAMS death in Carlow is probably her but as you say the age gap is quite big so she was still in the "working theory" pile. Jenny
I have now had another hunt around: I mentioned my concern about the Tipperary marriage.I now find one of her sisters also married there, so am considering that correct though I will continue to try to discover the reason.(it might be an army connection) I agree with the 1853 Griffiths especially as it is just a house of low value, consistent with a servant but not so covinced about the 1860 Shankill especially now that I have found children still being born in Carlow. Though worth a bit of investigation as there do not seem to be many 'Adams' families around. I have looked at the death record for Sarah in 1896 again and see the address is Burrin St, which I now know is where one of the children was born. Bingo I think. Thank you Janet
