Or to give him his full title, The Royal Polish vocalist, Signor Jacobowitch. He, his wife Madam Jacobowitch and their son Frederick were celebrated royal entertainers in Poland. They came to England and gave many concerts. I'm trying to find a flyer (picture) for an article. Years 1833-1870's 'ish. Can't seem to find one.
Plenty of newspaper reports but so far no actual flyers, perhaps they were only for major single artists FMP "19 June 1850- Hereford Journal - Hereford, Herefordshire, England" Fife HeraldFife, Scotland 10 Sep 1846 and this.... Ebook free: found when searching under Frederick JACOBOWITCH ps seems to be a few Family trees..maybe more info that way ?
Just reading their 1861 census info & Fred's marriage... At Huddersfield 1861 Abraham Jacobowitch 52 Poland Anna Jacobowitch 48 Isle of Wight Fred A. Can this be the same Family? 1851 has them listed as all born Poland,..1861 as above ? Fred A. Jacobowitch b. ..certainly looks like Ireland on the image.
http://admin.concertprogrammes.org.uk/html/search/verb/GetRecord/4252 I now understand this better, having seen the marriage of Abraham& Anna. ABRAHAM JACOBOWITCH Marriage 5th May 1840 CARMARTHEN, ST PETER Spouse ANNE FREDERICK HARTMAN Groom's father Abraham Jacobowitch Bride's father Wm Frederick Hartman County Carmarthenshire, Wales
Very well done Wendy. I know that the Jacobowitch's did a tour of Ireland so it is possible that their son was born there. Mr Hartman did accompany Signor on most of his dates. I never thought that there may be a link between Signor and Hartman.
Wendy, you thought laterally, going after Frederick and Mr. Hartman. Wish I had. I just went after Signor Thank you very much. Wonder if there's a copy out there somewhere on't net of the poster.
Hmmm, I saw it as Mr Hartman (b.1840ish) as Madam Anna's son with or without Signor Abraham Jacobovitch. Still quite probably their son. Perhaps Mr Hartman was Anna's brother?...yet, 1851 he is aged 10 a musician son of Jacobowitch.wrongly listed as nephew on Ancestry. 'Madam' listed as Kaoam. 1861 Fred.A. Jacobowitch 20 a violinist. So who was he.? I can't find a Fred Hartman on censuses but I have been rather concentrating on something else today.
I thought I'd let you sort out this bunch - looks like a real family affair Blackburn Standard January 20th 1836 Assembly Room, Blackburn, Mr F. W. Perhaps try searching Google and catalogues of theatre archives etc. for the performers' names plus 'hand bill' or 'handbill' which is another word for flyer. I give a couple of examples below but am supposed to be working so couldn't spend much time looking. The Concert Programmes website has a reference to an 1849 poster for 'Two Subscription Concerts by Signor Jacobowitch (vocal) with Mr Frederick Hartman (violin) and Madame Jacobwitch (harp)'. It's shown as being in the local studies library in Oxford (so is probably now at the Oxfordshire History Centre, not at the address given on the website). http://www. concertprogrammes.org.uk/ I can look at it next time I'm in Oxford to see if it is illustrated and (if so) ask about procedure for getting permission to use images on websites. Might not be for quite a while though, as the bus fare to Oxford is so extortionate now that I can't go as often as I'd like. The catalogue of the Scottish Theatre Archive mentions a handbill advertising 'The Royal vocalist, Signor Jacobowitch, the vocal Paganini. Subscription concert in the Trades' Hall, Glasgow, on Friday next, the 21st July.' Perhaps you could e-mail them to ask if it is illustrated.
University of Glasgow, Special Collections, Scottish Theatre Archive has a printed programme/handbill for a concert at the Trades Hall, Glasgow, but presumably you would have to pay to obtain a copy. Janet
Perhaps a query on places such as F.Book would find someone local who could have a look into that. Meanwhile, probing family search for a Frederick Hartman- one such: Fred Hartman-Musician, superior Court, new York County naturalized 10 Oct 1884. Reading this conversation with delight. My husband is a descendant of this family. I am happy to share the research that I have performed on this family and am interested to see if anything further was uncovered beyond what is written in this old conversation.
