Hello, all I have a baptism at Stoke Damerel for a John Palmer BICKELL on 28 June 1829. I am having a couple of difficulties making out some things: 1) the father's occupation is "Ropemaker" and then it says "In H. de Gard" or something -- I can't make it out. He lived in Stoke, so I was wondering if it had any relation to a local place or ship builders'? It doesn't look like anything to do with H. M. Navy, does it? 2) the Rector's name is eluding me - looks a bit like "W.J. Nauss" but it also could be "W.J. Waugh," I think. I've attached the scan of the baptism for John Palmer and for the adjacent one which had the same Rector and couple of similar letters --- would be most grateful for any ideas. Thank you Mary Anne
The Incumbent in 1829 of Stoke Damerel was WJ St Aubyn. The post town was Devonport, Diocese of Exeter. Curate was WS Hore Patron was Sir J St Aubyn.
Mary Anne, It looks rather like a 'P' to me P.ele d Gord. I would have hazarded ' & ' Gord but the entry below has a different way of 'and'. The Rectors name seems to begin with a capital A.but what is that letter before it? Have you been able to look at more of this Rector to clearly see his name. I was looking up clergy but got distracted. Seems he was a Blacksmith in 1814 a time of his marriage. nought to do with anything probably but found this from before the time of his marriage :- Premises leased: Piece of Ground and Dwelling House thereon at Lammy Hill -1812 premises leased: 1814= a messuage Courtlage on Lammy Hill known by the sign of the Duke of wellington courtlage: the fore or backyard of a house messuage: (Law) property law a dwelling house together with its outbuildings, curtilage, and the adjacent Oh, really that long I was in 'distract' ? Good one Sue.
