Code: http://londonist.com/2014/03/detailed-victorian-london-map- superimposed-on-google-maps Just found this most interesting map, its a superimposed map of old Victorian London and they have superimposed it over a google map of London today. I have just found where my Grandfather lived, its really interesting. As you scroll in and out the Google map will flash underneath the old Victorian Map. Have fun, certainly kept me quiet for a few hours.
Thank you - have spend a happy hour on there playing with the streets of Stepney, the slider is great you can switch from one map to the other and even stop in between so you can see both maps at the same time
I have to be honest I was quite impressed with myself I managed to find Russia Land and Quinns Square all on my own and not to mention Blanchard Street, Neath Place and John Street, so was able to pay a visit to my East End London ancestors.
I was trying to access this site to check for an area noted in a baptism, but can't get it to work. Can any one assist please or offer light on where this may be? It appears to read 'Wilton's Place, School house Lane, Stepney Parish. This is a Baptism I've not found before- all other children being in Bermondsey areas.
I think it may be 'Warton Place' Schoolhouse lane is in Tower Hamlets, Stepney, london. It runs North - South from Cable Street to The Highway. Use the following for an overlay map of 1892-1905 (there's a blue dot in the bottom left corner that you can slide to overlay the newer map) Code: http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18&lat=51.5111&lon=-0.0460&layers=168
Many thanks Chimp, I saw that map but not Warton Place. Went on with the little google man but didn't find any enlightenment. Was half expecting a workhouse due to many websites I'd found on Google. Non Denominational sites also came up. Now I see the 'Friends meeting house nearby, - I wonder... Again I guess it's in the ear of the listener when writing these things down. [Did your finger refuse to let go of the 'F'?]
There's a brief description of Warton Place in the Charles Booth notebooks http:// booth.lse.ac.uk/notebooks/b350/jpg/163.html It's a bit difficult to read, but gives you an idea of the conditions ......
thank you Ann, I can only feel thankful that they were back in Bermondsey & surrounds for the birth of their next 5 children. possibly not a whole lot better.
Something similar is available for UK generally at http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=12&lat=51.5103&lon=-0.3334&layers=39&b=1&point=51.5101,-0.3241.
