I don't believe I have posted about John - my wife's 2X gt-grandfather. Here follows what I know: 1] He married Lucy Morris after Banns on 10 November 1833 in St. Mary Swansea. The witnesses were George Morris [likely the father of Lucy] and William Davies. 2] I have census records for both 1841 and 1851 and in both John is is indicated as a Mason by trade. In 1841 his age is given as 32 and in 1851 he is 41. His place of birth was indicated as Swansea. As of 1851 census he had 6 children - 5 daughters and one son - living. A daughter - Selina was born in 1852 and died in 1857. I have not been able to locate a census for this family in 1861. Help me please. 3] By 1871 John was deceased. This is confirmed by numerous sources: a] 1871 census - RG10/5456/13/20 - 7 Hall Street, Swansea. Lucy is now a widow and has 2 children with her - Charlotte [age 32] and John [age 26]. b] A marriage - 25 December 1869 - at the Ebenezer Chapel in Swansea between Annie Mainwaring and Daniel Jones. This certificate indicates John was a Mason and was deceased. There are 3 possible deaths in Swansea and neither has an age: John - 2nd q. 1863 - vol. 11a page 323 John - 3rd q. 1865 - vol. 11a page 287 Evan - 4th q. 1865 - vol. 11a page 320 Rather than pirchase 3 deat cert.'s in one go, can burial records be found? Help me please. As noted his indicated age could be c. 1809, but there does not appear to be a baptism for a John Mainwaring in Swansea. Can a baptism record be found, please?
Colin there is an Evan Mainwaring in Swansea on the 1861, so I think you can cross off the Evan death in 1865 as being your John, but how you decide which of the other two is your man without the d/c I do not know. I cannot ind any burial records either. Lots of trees on Anc, but none have John in 1861 (nor Lucy in 1871), and some have a death in 1875 Carmarthenshire, which we know is not right His parents are listed as Edward Mainwaring and Mary Thomas but none have any baptism details.
Thank you for trying. Looks like I'll buy one and then see if the informant is his wife Lucy and if that fails then I'll try the other. Can't think that there's an alternative.
There is an alternative, you can apply to the GRO without giving any reference number (where the question asks "do you know the ref no.?" tick no and a new screen opens where you can enter any info that you want to see on the cert) and if you specify the year 1864 they will look 1 year either side which encompasses the two deaths you have listed above. This takes around 3 weeks, probably more with the Christmas break, but if you are not in a hurry saves buying on a 50/50 chance and if you get it wrong having to buy another cert.
I have Mainwaring's from Swansea in my family tree and a lot of them are stonemason's / mason's but have only gone back to 1835 and need to do a bit more digging.
Hi Wendy , there are quite a few in the tree so far but still to research them all, could be uncles / brother's of GGG grandfather Daniel Mainwaring born 1835 swansea or father maybe as were all stonemason's/ mason's
