I am looking for info on Owen Kelly's parents and siblings He was born approx 1841. All info greatfully received
Gillyflower all records for this area before 1845 were damaged in fires. If any partial survives, they are held at Dublin. If you had an idea of what religion or church, then you are to get in touch with the church yourself with the information you know. X x
Hello and thanks for looking. He was Roman Catholic. His year of birth is very approximate. I have his army records but nothing about his parents. is Killoughter the Catholic part of Annagh. I am hoping to go to Dublin later this year. is it the records office that I need to go to?
Catholic and protestants both lived in kiloughter till the Easter rising, then it became mainly catholic. To search the records for any if they have any even a partial will be at the national library of Ireland, Dublin. That is where catholic records will be only. Protestant records are at GRO Dublin or PRONI Belfast. Census records between 1861-1891 are permanently all lost. Civil registration from 1864-1922 at GRO, Dublin. A very small remains of 1821-1851.. For wills/admin bonds/marriage licence bonds, pre 1858, all destroyed, but indexes survive in manuscript or printed form. The national archive of Ireland hold various church of Ireland records also. Il check for you if there is a newspaper library like there is in Belfast. If u need any more information on how to search n where n dates available, don't hesitate to ask x x
Army records depend on which regiment he joined. Some will be held in Dublin if its an Irish regiment. If its inniskillen fusiliers, they are held in Enniskillen, co.tyrone and you have to pay to view them or get any information online. If its an English regiment they are available via kew Gardens or the army museum in London x x
Many thanks for your help.He was in Cavan Militia & then transferred to 10th foot which later became Lincolnshire Reg. I do not know why but he served for 25 years! I do have his military records I got them from the national archives at Kew. His wife came from Redhill also in Annagh I think? but am not sure. Their last daughter born somewhere around there 1882 but with a name like Mary Kelly there must be thousands. Definitely going to Dublin and some coastal areas later on this year, probably autumn
Did a bit of digging around online. Are u aka Patricia? She is also looking info on same people. On ancestry she has Mary Kelly possibly born at st brigids in redhills. She wrote to them in 2007 and still has no info. It is possible records are lost permanently that's why she never heard back from them, or because Mary kelly is too popular name and there is too many of them. Now she has Owen Kelly living at annagh house, an cnoc rua (Gaelic name for area, this might help your search). She states Owen n Ann had 8 children n Mary the only born in Ireland x x
Owen Kelly has been misspelled as Oliver in 1881 census records, then back to Owen in 1891. So maybe try looking for Oliver kelly also. It could be that his name Owen Oliver or vice versa. She also states it could now possible that Mary Kelly birth could now be in co.waterford. Your Owen Kelly will have travelled around a lot in militia and army so its possible they could be married in any county. X x
101st cavan militia main barracks was in belturbet, co.cavan. Enniskillen castle military museum holds all information regarding this regiment. Be warned though, they charge a fee, and it can be quite costly. As a private in 10th regiment of foot is with north Lincolnshire regiment. He most probably moved away from Ireland, because men that joined the British (especially Catholics) were targets even back then, because the Irish hated being ruled by the British government. Which makes me wonder about the religion of Owen and Ann. Ann (without the E on the end) is usually now known as a protestant spelling. Maybe broaden your search to COI. If they continued to be staunch Catholics, was your Ann baptised in a catholic church before she was married, if not, then you need to search civil marriages, as they would have been married either in a COI church or on the steps of a catholic church. Also due to my own research, it's possible they lied when they got married, lots of my catholic relatives had children out of wedlock and lied on census forms. So widen your dates to after first child born. As back then if they were made to go in front of their congregation and admit their sin, if the congregation were not happy with them, they'd be austrasized (spelling of word could be wrong). X x
Thank you for looking. Yes I put some queries out on Rootsforum and British Genealogy boards ages ago.I haven't got much - other than what you found. There are some trees on ancestry that have his Parents? however they have no sources to prove anything of the sort. We could all find a person's name and fit them to suit - regardless of whether they are ancestors or not. Someone once told me that he would be blacklisted as he joined an English Reg. I have no idea why. I have always been told they were R/C but it is a good idea for me to check. I have no idea to Ann's family I assume they were R/C too. but not sure. I will keep looking and I now have a few more tips to help. I do not think Mary Kelly was born in Waterford either - as again no proof. I know they apparently returned to Ireland 1881 and were back in England by 1885. Over the years I have tried many times - hoping to find something always hitting a huge brick wall. He gave his discharge address from the army as Redhills. I was advised to contact St Brigids . but no help there. He seems to have been born in Annagh, so I thought his wife might have come from Redhills.
If Owen and Ann were RC, yes they would have been blacklisted, by her family and his. The RC community as a whole would not anything to do them. My past relative did the same and ended up in scotland. His RC church would not marry him, and the community and members of his own family gave him a very hard time. They never returned here or kept in touch once they settled in Scotland. So I'm thinking yr Ann McGuire is another religion, and thats why they returned, because if she was not RC, her family would welcome them, and the protestant community would welcome them. I could be wrong though, I'm just going by my own family research. Next time I'm at PRONI, Il put in your names and see how many Owen and Ann Kelly's there is. Its a shame its the number one surname here. But am Irish tip, first born son named after father's father, second born son named after mother's father. I've a list here, do u have all names of their 8 children x x
Many thanks. I had not though that one of them might have been a different religion. I will look at that. I never know how much this naming system works. Yes all the children's names were - Catherine,John, james, Patrick, Owen, Margaret, Mary & Arthur.Mary was the only one born in Ireland.
If the family followed the rules of naming children, its just possible as follows; Catherine, named after mums mum. (possible Ann mum is Catherine McGuire.) John, named after dads dad. (possible Owen dad is john Kelly). James, named after mums dad. (possible named after James McGuire who could have married Catherine.) Patrick, named after dads grandad. (possible Patrick Kelly, fraternal grandad). Owen, after mums grandad, maternal. Margaret, after Owens mum (possible Margaret m James Kelly). Mary, after mums gran. Arthur, after dads grandad maternal. Hopefully this might help in your search, fingers crossed x x
Thank you I have been looking. I got a bit excited a couple of times - alas to no avail - but I am still looking - so who knows. I think Ann must have been Catholic or converted as she was buried after a Catholic church service.
