Those of you who have known me for a long while also know that George is my bete noir. Some of you have helped try to dig him up in the past to no avail :). On his son's marriage 'stificate in 1842 he is a publican. Said son according to the 1851 census was born in Nottingham(shire). So, I have a very handy and attractive looking candidate but have never managed to find a link. Can anyone find me a marriage between George Simpson and Martha (?). This George and Martha are together in a pub in Farnsfield Notts in the 1841 and 1851 census.
    H0107; 865; 9; 4 (1841)
    H0107; 2134; 240; 25 (1851)

I know that this George was born in Eakring and died circa 1867. Martha died a couple of years earlier. According to the 1851 she was born in Borrowdale, Derby. Can anyone find their marriage for me?

Have you seen the probate record 4/9/1867 for George Simpson d 13/8/1867, gentleman, widower - to Elizabeth Barlow of Eakring sister?

I wouldn't think that was too early as the son was likely born around 1820 to be getting married in 1842 :)

Yes Mollymay - I sent for it in the hopes that it named any other family. It didn't :(.

This is looking good. According to the census Martha was older than George I wonder if there were any children.

Having pondered on this overnight, George gives his birth year variously as 1799, 1800 and 1801 but Eakring is consistent. Does that make a marriage to Martha in 1817 a bit unlikely?

We're assuming that Martha was William's mother but supposing she was George's second wife.

Does the will imply that this George was a farmer or land owner?

Could this not be George's second marriage? > http://nawcat.nottinghamshire.gov.u...&dsqPos=3&dsqSearch=((text)='george simpson')

The will is at home at the moment (and I am not :) ) but it was for very little from memory less than £200. He didn't leave any property at all. It was an admon if I remember. Martha dies a couple of years before him

I have never seen that before Flook. So bear with me a minute. This could be the George and Martha that show on the census but that doesn't mean that William's mother was Martha. In fact she couldn't be. Am feeling a bit thick at the moment. Sorry :(

The 'stificate for this marriage is at GRO so I have to send for it. I wonder if he married had William was widowed then married Martha. Am I spinning a fairy story???

That could be it (not the fairy story :)) and the marriage certificate ought to show if he was a widow. Whatever...we need to eliminate this George and Martha or else start firming up their former lives from the information given. I think this certificate might offer up several useful clues.

Just a little snippet, in the Stamford Mercury for the 15th August 1867 -
"At Farnsfield, Southwell, on the 13th, Mr George Simpson, formerly a publican, aged 68."

...and I see that Nottinghamshire Archives holds this>
List of monumental inscriptions in Farnsfield churchyard, 1749-1976 DD/341/20 1976

What you really need Blackmogs is some retired person with few commitments who lives a short bus ride from these archives. I'll put on my thinking cap :)....
