Maybe it wasn't quite so large after all as from the list of names given me I have been able to eliminate 3. So looks like 8 - 3 conventional baptisms and 5 Non-Conformist.

    2 died in infancy.

Have finally heard from a tree owner and am now digging for information outside of what between us we have - and that information is sketchy at best!!

One of the problems seems to be with baptisms in that there appears to be duplications of some between Non-conformist and Church. Was this a practice in the late 1790's and early 1800's?

Quite possible, especially if the family converted.

My Great Grandparents were baptised in the Parish Church and then again when they became Baptists. Their eldest son was baptised in both as well.

One of the children of John and Ann is causing us some grief and help is appreciated.

    Elizabeth Keech.
She was born 19 April 1805 and baptised 22 April 1805 - New Meeting Barrack Street, Independent - Bridport, Dorset.

I thought I had found her with a marriage to a Robert Dine in Fordington St. George on 17 November 1831 - after Banns. In 1841 census in Fordington - H0107, Piece 284, Book 24, Folio 6, page 7 - she is with husband Robert and 4 children. Her age - rather than 36 had been rounded to 30. I then found a death in Dorchester [┼Áhich covers Fordington St. George] vol. 8, page 41 - Apr-Jun q. 1847. So far - so good.
Then I found a burial in Fordington St. George for an Elizabeth Dine on 7 May 1847 and this record indicated her age at burial as 65. If this is not a transcription error on Ancestry then I have lost Elizabeth Keech.

    Can she be found, please?

Family Search also has the age as 65, so it seems that she is not yours.

However, have you considered in 1851, HO107, piece 1858, folio 202, page 37?

Okay, so the age is a little out, but remember - the ages are only as good as the person who gave the information. I have a member of my own family whose age was never the same (+ 10 years) two censuses running....

OK. It looks likely that I can eliminate the 1847 death and concentrate elsewhere.

I hadn't found the one you mentioned, Jan. I'd concentrated on finding a census for 1851 that included at least one child from the 1841 census as well as living still in Fordington and found - H0107, ED 6f, Piece 1858, Folio 197, page 26 - however Elizabeth's birthplace was Fordington which made me certain I was chasing the wrong one.

Have now looked at this one. Elizabeth's age is given as 39 [born c. 1812] a Widow and occupation Laundress. Her place of birth is given as Portesham [which is a neighbouring village to Abbotsbury - I believe].

Portesham, Fordington, Abbotsbury etal are in the the Dorchester R.D and I am staring to think we should be honing in on Bridport and environs.

But how do I do this?

Can we look at another Keech child?

Joseph KEECH - son of John and Ann - seems to have been baptised twice - as follows:
15 January 1801 - New Meeting Barrack Street - Independent - Bridport, Dorset. The transcription indicates his date of birth as 27 December 1800.
5 May 1803 - Joseph along with his brother Thomas wre baptised in Church in Bridport Dorset. Young Thomas died and was buried 23 December 1804 in Bridport.

An infant by the name of Joseph Keech was buried 24 January 1802 in Bridport. I have yet to find a baptism for this child.

There are at least 20 public trees on Ancestry featuring Joseph son of John and Ann. Some have the baptisms noted above, while others indicate his year of birth as 1797. I know the reason why they've the year as 1797 however I wonder if there is another baptism I am missing.

I can provide details of my findings but would like clarification of the possible other baptism.

Portesham and Abbotsbury are actually in Weymouth RD, having said that Weymouth RD borders Bridport RD, and these two are near that border. As an example Portesham is only 6 miles from Puncknowle which is in Bridport RD.

I wouldn't be in a rush to dismiss Portesham as a likely birthplace :) ... just sayin' ;)
