    Hi All
Unsure if this is correct forum,my apologies if not.

I have an Emmanuel Hetherington b 1823 in Plymouth,Devon,England who I found on the above records for 1845-1854. I have hit the brick wall on finding any more on this chap and would appreciate any advice. I did go on on the mariners list @ rootsweb with no replies
    Thankyou

Welcome to Top Dog Joanne. (Ooops I see you've been a member for a while - glad to see you anyway!)

I am presuming you can access Find My Past, if you found the Merchant Navy Seaman Records? If so, if you do a search for Immanuel Hetherington, you will find his baptism in Plymouth in the Devon Baptism Registers.

The National Archives have a number of Research Guides for folk who were in the Merchant Navy.

Take a peek here and then click on whichever is the most appropriate to you. :)

Thankyou Ann and sorry, should have mentioned find my past is how the culprit turned up originally along with with two sisters deceased and two surviving, one of which I'm descended from. I am unable to find anything other than those two records about Immanuel including 1841 census although I am looking again

A very small snippet, found in the Bristol Mercury for the 20th January 1849
Council House, Bristol, Sat. January 13th
Emanuel Hetherington, mate of the Majestic, for smuggling 1 3/4 lb of tobacco, was fined 40s and costs.

In the same newspaper, there is mention of the Majestic in the Bristol Imports section. The Majestic had arrived from Smyrna carrying 130 tons of valonia (which seems to be valonia oak, an ingredient used in the tanning process), 16 tons of white stone of Greece, 17 drums of figs and raisins, 10 yards of velvet and 1 Turkey rug.

When I go into National archives to look into merchant seaman records, I keep getting dropdown menus to choose from. When I click on them additional ones open, can't seem to find a document to actually read.
I am obviously doing something wrong. My great great grandfather is showing up sporadically on censuses, but he is listed on his sons wedding cert as a mariner, other than his name being William Henry Smith I cannot seem to trace him. There are numerous others of the same name but they are still alive in 1880, but on my great granddads wedding certificate he is marked as deceased ???
This business of fathers giving their sons the exact name as them is driving me crazy........

David, don't forget Fathers on marriage cert's have been known as deceased when there has been a parting of the ways in a family or if child grew up not knowing the Father.
