Marcus de la Poer Beresford of Carahaven The Warren, Bracknell, Winkfield, Berkshire, died 7th June 1965, probate to Hugh de la Poer Beresford and Anthony de la Poer Beresford, company directors. £25528
Thanks Jan. We are desperate for help. Mum Phyllis Edith widow of Marcus died 22 Feb 1972 cremated at Breakspear Crematorium Hillington. Now a child for Hugh and Ursula could be a daughter born 1944 Uxbridge. Had a look and Uxbridge is near Hillington, mother Kirby. There is also a son born 1941 Salisbury Wiltshire, mother also Kirby. I'm having doubts now!
Probate: Hugh de la Poer Beresford of the Tower, 2 Torfield Road, Eastbourne, died 14th April 1984. Probate Brighton 12th July. Not exceeding £40,000. Lay your hands on a copy of that will and it could answer many questions!
This put me off, but then realised they probably were directors separately of their own companies or even of Dad's.

Nothing to say they were not cousins, going now before it all starts to dwell in my night-time ponderings.
Goodness, you have been busy Seeing as we had all almost given up...... I've been having trawl through The Times and am absolutely amazed at the amount of de la Poer Beresfords there were/are! Anyway, I have a couple of things to throw in the pot - not that I think they will help...... The Times 11th October 1939 Oct. 6 1939 at Pinner Parish Church, Lieut. Hugh de la Poer Beresford R. E., elder son of Mr and Mrs Marcus de la Poer Beresford of "Greenways", Pinner to Ursula Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Kirby of "lavender's Cottage", Pinner. The Times 16th November 1978 Mr Anthony de la Poer Beresford to be a governor of Harrow School The Times September 9th 1981 at a memorial service for Sir Frank Shires Mr A. de la Poer Beresford, J. J. Heinz Company, gave an address I can't get my head around all these people, but I will take another look at the Times later.......unfortunately it only goes to 1985. Ann
This is what I was afraid of. Our Hugh was making hats then! Maybe BLH was correct. It's not his Hugh. He's supposed to have at least one sister as well because his 'mother and sister(s) encouraged him'.
Wow you have all been busy, The Brighton phone book has resulted in possible progress but not with the de la Poer's It makes my discovery more complicated than it already is. Little time to fill in now, but will be back in tonight with the Update.
You have all been fantastic in your searching, thank you so much. Now we are back up and running again, Some positive progress within the Phone directories. Hugh seems to have two commercial addresses in Brighton 46 Preston Road then moves to no 70 A. Prior there are five entries for a Hugh Beresford at 14 Stanford road, at a guess a residential address random between 1959-66 Very significant in 55,56 at the same address Mrs C. L Beresford is in residence. This could be my my grandmother. By 1972 Hugh had move to Chichester, via Eastbourne and Hastings. The family background is sketchy and complicated and the jigsaw far from completion. My father's line is Beresford. He married my mother but the relationship broke down and they separated, when I was about 2 years of age. All I had to go on is my mothers/ fathers marriage cert, his age plus knew he'd been born in Hendon The witness' on the cert G.L.Beresford, and Herbert Beresford deceased, as my dad father Searches both drew a blank on both. I traced a birth record for my father A.R Beresford but reveals no mother. 1939 census using the address on the marriage cert. finds my father living with Cordelia Beresford (CLB) a mistype G for C on the marriage cert, ? one of the same person ? . Now with Cordelia's date of birth I managed citations for Cordelia, parents and siblings. John Waddington Beresford ( JWB) was Cordelia's father . JWB had four daughters, born in London one died at birth. Two married, the other daughter Cordelia (CLB) 1885 died in Brighton 1958 a spinster if ancestry citations are correct. This date falls in line with the phone records ending in 57 (Brighton) 1911 census confirmed JWB, his wife ,and one of the daughter not Cordelia and a grandson, my father, here his middle name reynolds is recorded as his surname, no mention of Beresford but DOB and place of birth. were identical .to his birth record If correct JWB must be my great Grandfather. JWB didn't have a male heir, which leads me to believe my father was born out of wedlock to the unmarried daughter Cordelia I've ordered my fathers birth certificate to confirm my suspicions. In searching Reynolds another surprise. 1911 census shows a Cordelia L Reynolds same birth year district in london as Cordelia L Beresford. working in an area close to where the family were living . Too much of a coincident. Between 1918 and 1919 she e is a record as a Cordelia Reynolds an administrator in the air force, the details don't give DOB or address By the time my father married, his middle name had changed from Reynolds to Reginald Beresford Cordelia in 1939 and in the Phone directories had changed her name back to Beresford and assumes the title Mrs. Sourced from electoral registers. Cordelia and my father pop up at various addresses in London together At some point my father moved to Hove nr Brighton, where he died in 1987 Cordelia died in Brighton. 1957 By 1972 Hugh had moved from Brighton to Chichester, via Eastbourne and Hastings. Without a birth date, and any citing of records there still hangs a big question Who is Hugh Beresford. Who are his parents and where did he die, what is his connection with Cordelia, is she also his mother.
