I am looking for info regarding a ancestor, he was convicted of a crime in 1805 , and was sent to the Army instead of being transported , any suggestions on where to start looking please ??

Do you have a name, D.O.B. area in which he was living, where he committed the crime. Anything to start us off ;)

was sent to the Army instead of being transported

Was he definitely not transported. I've found this.

Ah yes, He's in the prison hulk registers where it says, 'Pard'd (pardoned) 11 June 1806 something? something? Army.

This record courtesy of Ancestry's 'England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892' says.

Sentenced to death, pardoned to be transported for life.

Welcome WendyC|:-)
There are a couple of Rootschat and Rootsweb enquiries on James Hite/Hytt supposed brother Thomas And father Samuel. James was sentenced to death but was commuted to life. Stil very early in the morning here so will have a look later to see what pops up.

Family search has baptisms for children with parents James and Ann Hite at Colmworth.

William christened 15 April 1798; Edith 3 April 1796; Mary born 25 Oct 1805 christened 14 March 1819

Samuel his brother can be found in Tasmania. Transported in 1821. There is also speculation as to whether some of the children baptised were actually James'
This might keep you 'busy Lizzie' as I think there are quite a few convictions in the family. Good fun.:) Samuel died in Tasmania aged 90. Samuel actually stole from the Stringers
