Until recently I believed that William Conner married a Mary Walton about 1842 in London City. However I have just received, from a relative, copies of Birth Certificates for his children and they state that Mary Conner was formerly Mary O'Donnell. The children were all registered in St Ann, Soho, Middlesex. Their first child William was born 1852, so I assume the marriage was somewhere about 1845-1850. I have checked FMP, Ancestry, Family Search & FBMD, but cannot find William Conner marrying Mary O'Donnell. I can trace William from the 1841 census to his death, it's the missing links of his marriage to Mary and details about Mary who on census declares her place of birth as St Annes. Probably I'm missing something, but would appreciate any assistance with tracking their marriage details and more about Mary O'Donnell. Thanks.
Always possible Mary Walton/ O'Donnell started out in Ireland before she met & married first Husband.
I'm inclined to think that too, Wendy, particularly as William and Mary have a young woman with them in 1861 listed as niece and born Ireland, [Mary Cunningham age 17]
I have only just found a Rootschat forum asking the same question and it has been suggested that she may have been born in Ireland. Also on the forum was found a marriage FreeBMD of Mary O'Donnell 3rd qtr 1851 Whitechapel. On the same page is a bloke by the name of John Connor.
Perhaps this one? William Conner England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005 marriage: 1842 London City, London, England other: Ellen Mary Anne Agnes Cronin, Rebecca Hearne, Henry Husk, Eliza Lovegrove, William Montague, Mary Ann Wolton... F.search page 2
That's the one in post #1. Could he have married a Mary Ann Wolton first with no issue then a Mary O'Donnell second. There is such a big break in marriage and first child..... William jnr wasn't baptised until 1851.
Has a baptism been found? I haven't found one. The Mary in 1861 census is aged 33, if that's right she'd be only 14yrs in 1842!
Looks interesting, AM. A problem here seems to be a lack of online parish records for a marriage, or baptisms of the children, suggesting perhaps that they were of the Catholic faith.
Vicky says The poster on the rootschat thread says..........."I have a birth certificate for the first born (William) and the address given in June 1851 is 11 Regents Place, North St Giles" And says the mother's maiden name is O'Donnell.
I can only find the registration for William in St Giles in 1851 or 52 now I've forgotten, because Archie just got stung by a bee. He's not a happy chappy. But it looks to me like a second marriage to Mary O'Donnell
Poor Archie, hope no further nasties. I've been bottling/jar-ing Tomato chutney so my mind was a little elsewhere. Maybe there was no marriage to Mary O'Donnell until later, or mayhap Mary Wolton was in error due to name of William Conner. Has anyone seen another by that name. One pops up b.1806 on F.S. edit: please sleep well Lizzie.
It's odd that neither Ancestry or FreeBMD has a marriage for william Conne/or & ? O'Donnell, Catholicism wouldn't preven a civil registration. Perhaps he went to Ireland [or Scotland to marry ? Or- they just didn't. I've only found a marriage for Thomas Connor to a possible spouse of Mary O'Donnell. Marriages Jun 1853 Connor Thomas London 1c-273 O Donnell Mary London 1c-273 McCarthy Florence London 1c-273 Sullivan Ellen London 1c-273 Marriages Sep 1851 Whitechapel 2-671 John Connor with a possible Mary O'Donnell among 4 other ladies
1851 census Irish Strays....born in Ireland enumerated in Middlesex Mary O'Donnell, Kensington Town, Middlesex. (Seems Archie was bitten by a spider. $80 later and we will see how he goes. I am whispering so as I don't get caught) What do you think? Could it possibly be the Mary you are after? Is Kensington Town any where near where we are looking?
So many Mary O'Donnells to choose from, what aare the source details for this one AM? Nasty bites-spiders. Hubby had a ? bite on elbow recently with an extensive rash & a course of anti biotics. So many things can react with his medications. Interesting time tho'. Scruffs to Archie. I hope this doesn't become something really obvious which makes us squirm later.
Wasn't sure if I could put the link here so have sent it on a private message. If you think it can go here then please do. There are no sources as it is just a list of names and residences. Scruffs back to ya
