The Artful Dodger
R.I.P.
In the 1871 census - RG10, ED1, Piece 2407, Folio 6, Page 3 - Crewkerne, Somerset is the family of Henry Joliffe Ackerman. Henry's occupation is a Hemp and Flax Dresser. The family consists of Henry, his wife Susan [nee Taylor] - both born Dorset and 3 children - William age 4, Susan age 2 and Mary Jane age 8 months - the 2 older were born in Bristol, Gloucestershire [Clifton R.D.?] and the youngest in Crewkerne, Somerset [Chard R.D.?].
In 1874 in Somerset - 2 Alice Ackerman's were born - one in Chard Reg. Dist [Jan-Mar] and one in Clifton Reg. Dist [Jul-Sep]. It is likely one is mine but as they are 4th cousins the exact date and place of birth can be left unsaid at the moment.
I have them all in New Zealand some time after 1874 but not sure when. Henry died in 1917, his wife died in 1930 and Alice [who never married] died in 1941. All are buried at Clareville Cemetery, Parkvale, Wairarapa, - Block 6-G - Source New Zealand Cemetery Records.
The others married and then died as follows:
Susan - 8 August 1940 - Masterton, Wellington. She was a widow whose husband died in 1933.
William - 11 July 1956 - and is buried along with his wife [who died in 1950] in Row 11, Block K of Masterton Cemetery, Wellington.
Mary Jane - May 1958 - and is buried along with her husband [who died in 1938] in Block 5-I Clareville Cemetery, Parvale , Wairarapa.
All sourced - New Zealand Cemetery Records.
When Henry and Susan left England - I suspect some time prior to the 1881 census -
Susan was under the age of 40 so may have had more children in New Zealand. This is why I'd like to date their arrival.
Thank you.
