A surname in need of defining

Findem

The Fearless One. Rest in Peace.
Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index has the entry as Elizabeth Thueshma baptised 15 May 1576 at Thaxted, Essex.

I translate the surname as Thuerhma but I would like second opinions please.

The baptism entry is on the second page and the second entry in the year 1576, there is an Amy with the same surname up more towards the top which is clearer to read, someone has put a small x on the left of both Amy and Elizabeth's entry.

I was hoping it would be the EPRI's mangling of the surname Trueman but I think not but I would like to know what the surname is, I can't imagine what the modern day version of the name would be, it's like nothing I've seen before..

Elizabeth Trueman is the wife of Giles Fewell.

There’s another at the very bottom of the page, similar but looks like it starts with CHUER...
Another 3 up from the bottom.
On the previous page in 1572 is Amy Batma and John Batma but I think it’s is supposed to be BATMAN.

I'll go into where I have it saved, blow it up and check that one out. Actually I'm glad it isn't Elizabeth Trueman due to the lack of a parent name/names, as I've said before, some of those people recording details need a good flogging. :)

Just had a look, the one you mentioned at the bottom left hand side, the first letter of the surname certainly doesn't look like a T, more like a C as you said, whatever the name is, it is a strange surname.

Well it’s not starting with T as it’s nothing like T for Thomas on previous page. :reading:
I have pulled up old handwriting samples but there is nothing like what you have......

Fortunately I had a piece of luck this afternoon, I revisited an Elizabeth Trewman bap 17 Apr 1582 at Thaxted, Family Search have her buried the same day, same place. Looking again at the PR images attached to both entries hoping for a clue (miracle) I realised it was the same image in both the baptism and burial entry, that would explain why I couldn't find the burial in FreeReg or the EPRI.

So now I have Elizabeth's parent's Johis Trewman and Margeria Clarcke who married 20 Sep 1579 at Thaxted plus six siblings, there are possibly seven siblings, I suspect they would have had a son Robert. There was a Robert baptising children in Thaxted in the 1600s but I couldn't find him on the three sites I've mentioned.

I agree with Churchman. The name appears several times on these two pages, some with an upper-case 'C' and some with lower-case. This one is lower-case, but the tail of the 'h' from Elizabeth has run into it and confused matters.
