I'm looking for the whereabouts of Alfred in the 1861,81,91 and 1901/11 Censuses

He was born on 12th October 1850 in Llanvair Waterdine, Shropshire

He was one of many children born to Charles and Theodosia Edwards.

On 7th August 1879 he married Eliza Fanny Oriel in Hammersmith, Middlesex

He died on 4th Apr 1923 in Bridgnorth, Shropshire

For anyone up on their football he was one of the founding fathers of A.C. Milan.

He was president of the team for several years.

I have also seen him called Sir Alfred Ormonde Edwards (don't know how to find out where he was knighted)
 
Could he have been in Italy doing his thing with AC Milan at any of those dates? Or maybe on his way there or back?

I have found this, but it ain't much - you may have the details already.

Thank you very much Ann, I didn't have any of that, only the date. Well that tells me that he was in Italy prior to his marriage in 1879 (probably was there after 1871) but where was he in 1861.

There is a letter in the London Standard edition 17 March 1896 dated 13 March 1896 from an Alfred O EDWARDS who is Vice Consul in the British Consulate in Milan re street riots in Milan - could he be your Alfred?

that is a definite possibility Janet. i know that he was involved in that sort of profession.

That looks very likely, Janet: some Foreign Office Lists on Google Books say that 'Alfred Ormond Edwards was Vice-Consul at Milan, from May 15, 1893 to August 11, 1896, when he resigned'.

A history of 19th century Milan (in Italian) has something about him being in business with a James Melvin Bale from 1876. See footnote 70 here:

I can't make it all out: something to do with agricultural machinery (steam powered?).

Google for "Bale and Edwards" and "Bale & Edwards" plus Milan for more references to them. (ooh, just reread post #1 and noticed the reference to the Bale family there, so was he related to his business partner?)

Some histories of the football club say that Alfred returned to his 'homeland' in 1909. So perhaps we ought to be able to find him back on the 1911 census? Unless he went off on his travels again before then.

James Melvin BALE was born in 1846, he was the son of William P(ritchett) and Eleanor BALE.

Alfred stated that he was cousin to the head of the household in the 1871 census.

The head of the household was Eleanor Bale. Eleanor had been Eleanor Powis before marriage.

Alfred's mothers maiden name was Piper. So how that makes him cousin to the head of the household I have no idea. :confused:

Will need to dig deeper.

I think that google books thing is in Italian and I can't read Italian :(
 
Here is the full text of the footnote in the hope that someone can provide a proper translation:

Giunti a Milano per esercitare la «professione di ingegneri negozianti e agenti commissionari», James Melvin Bale e Alfred Ormond Edwards (socio grente) il 23 ottobre 1876 crearono una società in nome collettivo con un capitale sociale di 1500 sterline. Oltre alle trebbiatrici Bale, la ditta commercializzava locomobili e altre macchine agricole. La società fu sciolta e messa in liquidazione il 25 ottobre 1902.

I can only guess at bits with the help of Google Translate. '1500 sterline' is presumably £1500 sterling, which I think may be the share capital in their company (created in 1876 and wound up in 1902).

Bale & Edwards were selling trebbiatrici (threshing machines), locomobili (steam engines?) and altre macchine agricole (other agricultural machines).

Phew that's enough brain-work for today! Time to eat now . . .
 
Here's my attempt, Chimp.

James Melvin Bale and Alfred Ormond Edwards, business partners, went to Milan to practice the profession of engineers and commission agents, they created the partnership on 23rd October 1876 with capital of £1500, they manufactured agricultural machinery and were agents for locomotives. The company dissolved and went into liquidation on 25th October 1902.
 
Thank you Moo ;). On the 1871 census Alfred's profession was Engineers Apprentice. He was living with the Bale family. James wasn't there, maybe he was already in Italy.

I've been wondering about the 'Sir' question. Having looked at translations of several of the sites in Italian, I think it may have crept in in one of the translations :confused:. Some of them are hilarious.......but I can't find any evidence of Alfred actually being given a Knighthood. One of the translations which mentions him as a 'Sir' is
