Death but no Birth

Say a child was born in 1925 but was born asleep.

As it was born asleep, I take it there wouldn't be a birth certificate as the child didn't take a breath (well not one that I can find, a certificate that is)

But there is a death certificate. Would this be the norm. Would they need a death certificate to be able to bury the child as they do these days.

It sounds reaonable, I can't think of one in my line at the moment, only for many years later. I do have several who were listed as born & died in same month & year, obviously took breath.

In 1948, a lady I knew delivered a stillborn daughter, and her birth was registered (and the death obviously).

There was no requirement for a death certificate, although Section 18 of the the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1874 brought in the requirement for a signed declaration of stillbirth to prevent children who had been born alive form being buried as stillbirths.

Since 1927 stillbirths have been entered on a closed register held by the GRO, so there would still be no death certificate.
