Edward Theodore YOUNG

OK, I now understand how Willem is called Jonkher, and feel a lot happier about that 1881 census

I wondered whether Jonkherr was a title of some sort - thinking of Herr in German......never thought to Google it

Still looking for census sightings, but ain't having a lot of luck

Archives of the London-Dutch Church: Register of the Attestations or Certificates of Membership, Confessions of Guilt, Certificates of Marriage, Betrothals, Publications of Banns, &c., &c. Preserved in the Dutch Reformed Church, Austin Friars, London, 1568 to 1872 (published in 1892) is on the Internet Archive.

Most of the book is taken up with the abstracts of 'Attestations or Certificates of Membership'. One of the last ones in the book is this one from 1872:

3046. Wednesday, 14 February. A[braham] J[ohannes] Vis Dieperink. - (b) Willem Theodoor de Jongh van Arkel and his wife Johanna Hendrica de Boeuff. - (c) the Os and Hollandish Ref. Co. at London - (d) Schlagen, 14 February 1872 - (f) MS., D.; No Seal.

From the preface, this can be interpreted as follows: the certificate (which is handwritten, in Dutch, and has no seal) was issued in Schlagen on 14 February 1872, recommending Willem and Johanna to the Overseers and Hollandish Reformed Community at London. A.J. Vis Dieperink was 'the Minister or other person who testifies'.

So they presumably were still in The Netherlands at the time the certificate was issued.

Transcripts of baptism, marriage and burial registers of the Dutch Reformed Church in Austin Friars for 1571-1874 were published in 1884 (this book is on the Internet Archive - it seems a bit too early so I haven't downloaded it). I haven't yet found anything later online. It does sound as if a lot of records have survived (and are now at LMA?), even though the church itself was completely destroyed in the Blitz.

Well Johannes/Jan/John and Henriette are together in 1911 in Southwark St George. Looks as though neither of them married and they lived together all their lives, both dying in Ware in the 1940s.

I epected to find them in the same area in 1901 with their mother Johanna as she died in St Olave Bermondsey in 1903 (and as they are both with her in 1891) ... but I can't find them

Still, not a huge problem :)

However

I am more puzzled by two of the children of Zegerus/Edward & Harriet Sophia

(1) daughter Annie c1879 Bow in 1891 census and nowhere else
(2) son Ernest c1887 Bethnal Green who I have in 1891 and 1911* and a potential birth reg. in Sep 1886 but for a Henri (who doesn't appear in the censuses)

*actually I don't have any of this family in 1901 ...

BUT, I may give this a rest for now ... unless you lot are really keen to keep going :D:P

So they presumably were still in The Netherlands at the time the certificate was issued.

Yes, the earliest evidence for any of the family in England seems to be c1876 when Zegerus and Harriet married ... at least that is the first I have :), presumably he and his family arrived a little before this ...

Shame the online records stop when they do :(

You've done it again Jane, haven't you :D

I have just discovered that the Dutch church registers 1571-1874 are on Ancestry- only browsable, but they are there. I haven't got time to look now but........

It's amazing where this family history obsession takes you sometimes. In my (unsuccessful) search for the Van Arkels/de Jonghs/Youngs in 1901 I was surprised to find myself in a community of Dutch folk in Thorne, Yorkshire, all working in a peat works, and mostly very recent immigrants to judge from the birthplaces of their children. Then of course I wanted to know the whys and wherefores . . .
BUT, I may give this a rest for now ... unless you lot are really keen to keep going :D:p
I'd better stop there for now too. It has been a fascinating quest though, muggy: thanks for asking the question. :)
