I have traced John Fitzgerald (age 65) to the 1871 census, Born St Lukes,Middlesex. His Wife Mary (born Ireland) and three children John (15) Bridget (15) and Alice (12).
    I think the ref is RG10 0545/0160.

The two girls Bridget and Alice Fitzgerald are living together in the 1881 census at Red Lion Place, Wapping. No sign of Father/Mother. Bridgit as Head.

I cannot locate John or Mary in either the 1861 or earlier nor in the 1881 census and later records.

    Can anyone help here please?

You can find the family in Wapping in 1861 7 Upper Well Alley, Wapping
    RG09 piece 283 folio 92 page 26
FMP have the surname transcribed as Fitsgerald and the original confirms that spelling

And could this be their marriage at St John Wapping (source Ancestry London Parish Registers):

9 March 1851 John FITZGERALD of full age, Widower, Ballast Heaver, Upper Gun Alley, father James FITZGERALD, Labourer & Mary PATT, of full age, spinster, Upper Gun Alley, father John PATT, Labourer. Both marked and the witnesses were Edward SPON & Joseph POUND who both signed.

Could this be them in the 1851 census of Wapping (HO107/1550, folio 61, page 37) with children from his first marriage:

    3 Upper Gun Alley

John FITZGERALD Head Mar 35 Ballast Getter Middlesex Wapping
Mary do Wife Mar 25 do do
Daniel do Son U 16 do do
James do Son U 13 do do
William do Son U 11 do do

His place of birth and age seem to change with every census record!

    Hello Janet,
Thanks for all your info. Most of this helps me to connect with other family knowledge and assist with my compilation.

Yes, it is confusing that John Fitzgerald keeps changing his DOB. Maybe something to do with consumption of Guiness!

I have traced John and Mary up to the 1871 census:
John Fitzgerald 65, Mary Fitzgerald 45,and three children, John, Bridgit and Alice.

In the 1881 census Bridgit and Alice are living toether at 6 Red Lion Place, Wapping.

I cannot find any records 1881 for John and Mary and assume that they have probably died after 1871 . Have tried but failed to find any death records.

Can anyone help solve this for me?

I have merged the two threads as it is a continuation of the same query. :)

There is a death registration at Stepney in the December qtr 1872 of a John FITZGERALD, aged 51, which could be a possibility given that your John seems to have had a different age in each census. Also a death registration at Stepney in June qtr 1879 for a Mary FITZGERALD, aged 46. Stepney is the correct registration district for the parish of Wapping and these 2 registrations appear to be the most likely candidates.
