Just to the west of Funchal town centre, between Avenida Do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro, is a small public garden. Whilst there, I found the memorial to those from Gibraltar who lost their lives in Madeira during the Second World War. DSCF1016.JPG

It is not very big - no more than 5 foot tall - but lists all those who died.

I know exactly where that little park is (Parque de Santa Catarina, according to Bing) and have strolled through it several times making my way between town centre and hotel but I had never spotted that memorial.

    Thank you for posting this.

Just behind the chapel, if you visit the gardens again, Peter.

While serving in Gibraltar in 1955-57 I heard that Gibraltarians had been evacuated during WW2 but not how many or where, so thanks for that Jan.
