I have been struggling to read this since yesterday evening, and am no further forward. If anyone has a sharper pair of eyes/brain... Class: RG 9, Piece: 1472, Folio: 78, Page: 35. It's the second one down, under 'East Street'. (mutters 'Why couldn't they live in East Street?')
(It's in Crediton, Wendy; Willm Westcott if I'm looking at the right family) Looks like ....'hill's Place but the writing is awful so can't be sure. A few doors further down there is a 75 year old widow with whatever it is as a surname so I would think these are buildings she owned. Perhaps a directory will give some clues? Off to see if there is one . . .
Thanks Jane, been going through the Crediton lines looking at Perkins for a nearby folio no. Will have a go at Westcott too. Is it Underhill Place?/ Undrehill Place(sic)
I think you might be right, Wendy: well done! There is an Underhill's Court in East Street in 1901: http:// freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~footprints1/1901cen/crediton/2129/069-31.htm P.S. and references to the death of a Maria Underhill of Crediton, which could well be the name of the widow in 1861.
Sounds good to me Jane, mostly because my cot time is in 5 mins. Perhaps 'court' sounded better than 'Place'? ciao for now.
I was toying with Un-hill or Un-mill Place, but also wondered whether it began with an M or N or W; horrible writing Jane, I did find a 1844 Pigot's via Genuki, but it didn't help
Sorr-ee! That's what happens when you cut and edit your posts, and end up with only half of it - and then toddle off for a bath. 'Underhill' was as close as I could get, but then I wasn't sure. The more I looked at it, the more it didn't look like Underhill.
It's actually 'Court' in 1841, now that I am more awake. Unfortunately the same scribble, but the fact that the first letter is hidden by the previous page is a bonus, because it does look like '-nderhill' now.
I found a couple of directories too, but they didn't help either! The tithe map and award for Crediton might help pinpoint where Underhill's Court/Place was, if you can spot properties owned by an Underhill. There is a picture of the Crediton tithe map in this PDF file, but too low-resolution to make out the plot numbers: www. middevon.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=1726&p=0 The Genealogist already has tithe awards (showing plot numbers, owners & occupiers) and is digitising the accompanying tithe maps. From what they say on their website, phase 2 ('linking images of microfilm maps with the plot references') was due to be launched in Spring 2014 and Phase 3 (digitisation of 'original maps in colour') due to be launched in 2015. I am not a subscriber so can't check what's there for Crediton.
