“Had a chat to one of the researchers about this and they are unsure of its origins/significance. Nothing similar appears in our archives, so not really sure of its meaning. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is military related. Angus and Coote used to make quite a few lapel pins for military use and for military organisations, but mostly independent of the Australian military/defence force. It is hard to tell though. The sword depicted is a claymore which is associated with Scottish clans and Scottish military, so could be a reference to either Scottish heraldry or Scottish military”
He also added that it could be just a pin, the wearer being proud of his Scottish heritage.
@Sis is it a family piece?

I have had a look at a page of clan badges and there are quite a few that have a similar hand and claymore. The Shaw clan is the closest but with the hand upright. So perhaps it is a reference to a clan.
It is very interesting looking into all this. At least we know now that it might be Scottish.
