Hypothetical Baptism

kernowmaid

Our very own Cornish Maid
What is it??

There is a Mary Annie PRYNNE whose birth was registered (as PRYN) Q4 1874 (St Austell). Mother's maiden name: HEWET.
Censuses say that she was born at St Stephen-in-Brannel, Cornwall (which is in the St Austell registration district).

On 28 September 1883, a Mary Annie PRYNNE was baptised at St Clement (which is part of Truro), AGE 9, parents Edward & Mary. I think this must be her - but the baptism record (transcribed on the Cornwall OPC site) adds the note: "Hypothetical Baptm."

I'm puzzled:confused:. Please can someone explain what it means?

Jane

I’ve found this explanation on a couple of sites -
“Church of England - a baptism offered to persons in respect to whom it is doubtful whether they have or have not been baptised before.”
That’s something I’ve never come across Jane, so thank you for that :)
