Mystery Necklace

Thanks Wendy, I’m pretty sure the arrow and the necklace are two separate pieces. I just wish I had the original photo - I’ve set my cousin the task of going through any photos she has very carefully, hoping it might be lurking somewhere :reading:

OK, we are getting closer (thanks Em and Ann).....how about a collar pin like a man would wear in his shirt collar to hold it closed.........plus a chain and medallion necklace??

But I think you could be right (RE 2 separate pieces) bc it is a designer's nightmare in that it doesn't hang right and the two sides do not match.....in that photo anyway. Thoughts??
That is why I though it was light reflection on the right side making the glow distort the image.
On closer examining you are correct in that the right side has more work at centre than the left.

I won't put the photos out, but found more than one in Google which shows a woman wearing a cameo or gold brooch at the collar and then a pendant & chain below that. Perhaps that was the style in 1880!! I put "Victorian woman wearing chain medallion" into Google and quite a few pics showed up. Covered from neck to toe which makes one wonder how they ever had children (my bad, lol).

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. ;)

Sorry about that BH...it was your mention of a collar pin that got me hunting for a photo. I have a few old pieces of my grandmother's (which are big and clunky) born at that time and you got me thinking of a cameo or filigree brooch plus a necklace. I was surprised at how popular these medallions were.

Unfortunately the details around the neck are a bit blurry but it probably is a small arrow pin separate from the necklace and I don't think there is any particular significance to either other than its a style of jewellery then...do you! They also added long earrings which made that area a bit "busy".

Also have some "bakelite" pins of my mother's...why I don't know, lol. But those are worth a bit to collectors. Must check the era on them because she never wore them.

A thought from left field....

Is there any way that it could be a medallion of some sort that pertained to the Freemasons? Perhaps mourning a family member who had been one....

Anyway, just a thought....

Now that is also something I thought of and then discounted. Maybe not the Freemasons, but something like the Oddfellows or Ancient Order of Foresters. Some of the medallions pictured on-line could be similar, but with such a poor photo :sceptical:

Thanks Jan, I'll see if I can turn up anything along those lines. The other side of my family have both Freemasons and Oddfellows, but I've not found any in my mum's family - yet!

I'm still glancing at that photo from time to time and I'm going to be silly and add in another two penn'orth.....

I'm with Ann in thinking she's about 20 (her face and her blouse). I'll stick with my surmise and think she's just been awarded a prize. She wasn't expecting to and it wasn't a public competition otherwise her hair would probably not be so simple and demure (is it even parted?).

She was caught unawares by the photographer. The necklace had just been placed round her neck and she was asked to turn her face towards the camera - hence the fact that the medallion hadn't been adjusted properly and would account for her body (the blouse's buttons) pointing in a different direction.

Right, that's off me chest....

Funnily enough there's a photograph on the web that bears an uncanny similarity to Ann's great grandmother's. On this page scroll down to near the bottom and the 8th photo down is a young lady standing by a pot plant. Spooky.....

If she has any that are framed - get her to check if there is anything lurking behind.
I recently took a picture out of its frame (that my late MIL had of her parents) and behind it was another of her father that no one had ever seen before;)

Blimey Flook, have you ever thought of writing a novel, that’s a brilliant piece of theorising, I would love it to be true......

As for the photo - spooky isn’t the word, it’s uncanny.......:ghost: What a shame there isn’t any sort of description attached to it.

Funny you should say that MM, my cousin did have a couple of other photos in frames which she removed to take copies for me, and she found a marriage notice from a newspaper behind one of them, but sadly, no other pictures. This is the only one we have of Sarah :(

That photo is uncanny!! Btw, now you can see why wives stayed behind when their husbands went out to Jamaica, etc. Can you imagine being in humid 40C plus (105F+) temperatures in the 1800's dressed in voluminous, layered dresses like these??

Which by the way is the temp here in Toronto today......this is crazy!! Oops, plus a tornado forecast for late afternoon (going on 3 pm at the moment). Better go out and rescue the potted plants.
