If you look at the 1921 census, living at 35 Woodbine Street, Sunderland was Bernard Quinn, his wife Elizabeth plus his son John and Elizabeth’s father, Daniel Cassidy. Although, Daniel is recorded as being married, there is no trace of his wife (also Elizabeth) – they had split up and she had returned to her native Ireland.
Little did they know that the family would be torn apart as the new year of 1923 rolled in.
Daniel’s wife Elizabeth had decided to return to England on 14th December, mainly in order to participate in a New Year party to take place on 1st January. The whole family had been invited – with the exception of Daniel, who took offence at this. As the party progressed, Daniel was seething with resentment and gate-crashed the party – complete with a gun in his hand. He managed to fire off 5 shots before he was overpowered, seriously injuring both his wife and daughter Elizabeth. However, one bullet hit his son-in-law Bernard in the heart, killing him.
Following a very short trial for murder on 23rd February, Daniel was executed at Durham Prison today, 3rd March 1923.
