Many years later hopefully I can muddy some things up as I'm one of the direct descendants and this topic even within family comes up every now and then! The family gossip states that Gertrude Marriot's mother Harriet Marriott had her out of wedlock. Harriot/Bertha never got married, put she cosied up with a bookie later on in life (I'm assuming this is where George comes in to play). But the 1921 census really throws a spanner in the works, what with George and Alice being married.
