I am looking for my Great Grandmother Catherine Fearons (variations seem to be Fearon/Ferns/Fern) born c.1860 in Stirlingshire, according to later census when she was married. But I haven't been able to find a baptism. Her parents are Charles (Iron Miner) and Catherine Fearons (Fearon/Ferns/Fern), I have no further details for them. I found the names of her parents in her marriage register entry on ScotlandsPeople. (Yay for Scottish records!). I did find a Charles Ferns b.1839 Rutherglen, Lanarkshire in the 1861 census, but I have tracked him through to the 1881 census and he is still unmarried and a lodger. I would be eternally grateful for some help with this lady as I have been looking for her for years and years and ........
The best I can come up with is:- Katty (sic) Ferns age 3 b1858 Falkirk Stirlingshire East Bridge Street, Falkirk, Stirlingshire Bridget Gillespie wid age 49 b1812 Ireland Patrick Gillespie son age 12 b1849 Falkirk - occ moulder Katty Ferns - lodger age 3 b1858 Falkirk Margaret Ferns - boarder age 9 b1852 Falkirk - scholer (sic) James Gallichar - unmar. male age 24 b1837 Ireland - occ labour
Thanks very much for trying MM. They are probably transcribed as something quite obscure! Or maybe they weren't even in Scotland then, just thought of that.
Sis - I suspect you may have already seen this, but if you just put Fearons in as a surname, there are very few hits and everyone that I have looked at (with any Christian name) had a pob as Ireland - so I wonder if your family were Irish too and that is where they were hiding in 1861 & 71.
Hi Sis Scotland's People have in RC church records a baptism of a Catherine Ferns d/o John Ferns and Margaret Turley. b 7.3.1858, bp 16.3 1858 Falkirk, St Francis Xavier's.
I did find a Catherine Ferrand born 25 Jan 1859 baseborn to a Catherine Ferrand, Baldenock Stirling. From the marriage it looked like her mother's maiden name was Coll and she was down as 19 at marriage. Couldn't find a marriage for Charles and Catherine with a name anything like that. Used all my credits so can't look for any more... Maybe she wasn't born in Stirling....
Thanks very much @Lusmum. If can help anytime with SP just let me know. I will keep that baptism as a possible maybe. It wouldn't be the first time that I have found ancestors have given what they may think are their parents details and I've found out it's not so. Mind you both times it did turn out they were the people that seemed to have brought them up, so they possibly thought of them as parents.
From FS . Birth 1868 Baldernock, Mary Ann O'neil. Father Charles O'neil, mother Catherine Ferrand and birth1870 Baldernock Ann O'neil to same parents.
OK this is all getting rather interesting. Have found what I believe is the marriage of the parents of the Grizel's post #11. I have found what I believe is them in the census from 1881 to 1901. On the Irish government website I have found out that Ferran/d is considered one of variations of Fearon. So, off to mull over this and see what I can come up with. Thank you very much once again for your help ladies. May run my findings past you, if that's OK.
OK, this is getting more and more complicated As usual the new information I am finding, on Ancestry trees, don't always show a source. See you in a month or so!!! Exaggerating rather there, but you know what I mean I'm sure. Now, where is that pen and paper.
It could well be MM, but I need to some time without interruptions. Me thinks I may get up early tomorrow and tip toe around so's not to wake others.
And another brick wall comes tumbling down!!! What would we do without this wonderful forum!! Thank you all so very much for your help ladies. It's too complicated to go in to, but with the find of @Lusmum post #9 (Catherine Ferrand)and the other posts that helped me say yay or nay, birth and death certificates and a lot of hair pulling, I have found the answer to the Great Grandma mystery. It has led me to Ireland, so I may be back for further help! But at this stage I am quite happy to leave there, for now. (you know, just like I did at post #8)
