Signature comparison please

Sis

Rootles out resources!
The first one was done in 1876, she was age 24. The second one was done in 1911, the age given is 57. Do you think it could be the same person or too hard to call or a definite no?

I'm in the "hmmmmm" camp.

The first signature makes me think of someone who isn't comfortable writing, the second shows much more confidence and familiarity.

Certainly possible, but still "hmmmm". (Sorry)

Don't apologise Philippa, I'm all for honesty, thank you.:)

I'm with Philippa on this one.
Too hard to compare - too many years between ...

I think its the same person. Is there any reason to believe it may not be?
Just a much more mature Sarah I think.
My thoughts were along that line too, but I wanted others opinions. I will know for sure, hopefully, when I get her death certificate. So fingers crossed.

I am in the no camp - sorry. There are no kicks on the 'S' or the 'h' in the second signature. The 'o' in Rison looks different to the one in Porter, but the 'P' does look like the 'R'.
Perhaps someone else signed the 1911 for her (trying to be positive:angel:).
I hope the d/c proves me wrong;)

Thank you MM. I've been thinking about this and I think I'm just wanting it to be her. I will just have to be patient and wait for the death cert.:nailbiting:;)

The one stumbling block I have is that the formation of the "r" is so different in the two signatures and whether that would change so significantly over the years is a moot point. So I am with Ann on this and am sitting on the fence somewhat!

Thank you Janet. Yes, I must admit I did notice the r difference. The last letter of my surname is an r and the way I've written it has never changed. This is my last hope of finding my Gt Grandmother's death. Still at least I will know I've tried everything.:)

I'm in the 'possibly' camp.

The 'Sarahs' are very similar. People tend to become long-sighted rapidly around fifty; goodness knows what my signature looks like if I don't have my specs on. Perhaps she had always written 'Porter' with a different 'r' - there is no other Porter signature to compare, however there are similarities in the formation of some of the letters, notably in the loop in the downward stroke of the first letter and the letter 'o'.

In fact, I would lean towards 'quite possibly' with this one.

I'm also on the fence, but thinking about this:
I'm very much on the fence here, parts look the same, others look so different. My writing has changed over the years, but it's got worse, not better

The 1911 example looks more fluent (an extra 35 years' practice?), but you could argue that the 'r' is worse (less well-formed) because the increased speed has led to the curly bit at the top being missed off.

Looking at the whole of the 1911 census return, is there anything in the rest of the writing that harks back to the 1876 example? A signature may become stylised over the years, but ordinary writing perhaps less so.
