Hi
I have been a member of the "other" forum for some years, and have been investigating my family on and off for the same period of time. At present it is not possible for me to travel to record offices because of family commitments, and i have put having a real effort on the back burner till I can travel, but still dabble. I have a particular interest in the history of Birmingham, though have no definite ancestors from there, though do have some from nearby. I live in Reading, and as far as I know, have none from that area at all !. Ama always gald to help with any knowledge I can , and will eventually get down to doing my tree properly.

C|:-) Hi yourself, never been on the other forum, but am more than happy to welcome you here as all those old forum people are rather lovely ... not to say helpful, knowledgable etc ... and fun

Hello Mike C|:-)

Welcome to Top Dog where you'll find lots of familiar names from the 'other forum'. You'll soon feel at home here, and you'll be so glad you found TD.

Greetings Mike and welcome.

History of Birmingham? Hm, wonder if you have heard of James Josiah Swann, thimblemaker. He was my gg grandfather and founded James Swann & Son thimbles. The firm was still in existence until a few years ago - though no longer in the family.

Hi Mike - glad that you have made it! :)

Have a good old rootle, find the right places and start posting those questions. The super sleuths here are always ready to help.

Have fun!

Hi Mike and welcome to Top Dog C|:-) from another member of the 'other ' forum. Glad to see you here :)

Hey Mike, from where-ever, matters not. we're all here to do whatever we can to help sort out others who may need same. ;)

Thank you all for your welcome.
To Doug: I had not come across James Swann, but have some info on him via directories if any is of any interest. He seems to have started as a gold & silver thimble maker, the first mention I have is 1892, then went to calling himself a silversmith, then by 1973 (when the last Kellys came out) the firm was described as a sewing thimble maker. If it is of interest perhaps I could give more detail in the right place on a dedicated thread ?

Welcome Mike, lots of familiar faces here - though some in disguise:).
Good to have you here.

Welcome to Top Dog Mike. Enjoy looking around. You will find everyone friendly and helpful.

Thanks Mike.

I was asking out of curiosity more than anything else. I have him pretty much covered. Norma Spicer wrote a lovely little book on him some years ago. On the other hand if you have stumbled across any photos of him........

Welcome Mike, C|:-)
Glad to see you've found your way here.
Have a good look around and enjoy your self.
