Was William a Divorcee, or a Bigamist.

Does the seven year rule apply to someone who has been committed?
We are 2 years short but maybe she was elsewhere before coming to the Worcester institution.

How different for Sophia's younger sister. She married and had 4 children. Two died in childhood and neither of the other 2 married. End of story. :(

I know it's only my gut feeling but I think Grizel has found the "smoking gun" and, unless anything to the contrary comes to light, am going to assume that Sophia died 31 July 1883. It does seem rather more than coincidence that William waited until the same year quarter before remarrying.

There were a few minutes of concern this morning following the discovery of an asylum admission report for who could have been one of Sophia's granddaughters, as the report commented there was at least one case of mental instability on the girl's paternal side. At the bottom of the form were written comments made by "the girl's mother Mrs Kate Stone". Thanks for writing that Doc, I now know the girl concerned is not my distant cousin, but a namesake of the same age.

It's intriguing, but I'm not sure if it has any relevance. To date the number of Sophia's grandchildren found stands at 22. By far the majority were given one forename and just 2 were given a family name as well. They are the youngest sons of 2 of Sophia's sons, and both have Sophia's maiden name of Brittain as their second name.
