So far I have had no issue searching for military records when in possession of the medals. The details on the edge are usually more than enough to bring the records up straight away........but I'm struggling with this one! The inscription on the edges state:- 42208 PTE. W.H. HARDMAN. DEVON. R. I believe this is William Henry Hardman B:1883 Hereford.
If you've found all the ones you have searched for so far, then you are lucky. More than 50% of service records were destroyed in September of 1940 when a German bombing raid struck the War Office repository in London.
William H Hardman's medal record is downloadable from TNA for £3.50. It may provide more clues to nailing his identity... but might not... http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D2540576
Brilliant, thanks Jan. I tried all connotations of the search terms and I was nowhere near. I was just using FMP though.....should I have tried another site?
I used FMP and a combination of just his surname and Soldier number. This led me through to the TNA link. Sometimes, less is more...
I searched the All British Army WW1 Medal Role Index Cards for William H Hardman and put 104015 in the Regimental Number box.
On ancestry put in William H Hardman Where it says 'Keywords' put in 42208 (his service No.) do the search. Then select 'Military' His will be the first in the list. Beaten to it by JellyLegs
